    Ben Reid (DEF) - Collingwood

    Ben Reid

    Position: Defender (Rebounding CHB)

    Games Season 2010: 17

Previous Injuries in 2010: Quad injury that kept him out of 3 games.

    Job Security: HIGH

    Fantasy Relevance:

Reid will become the qtr back at the pies. His kicking is rated higher than most in the backline, Harry, Maxy, Johnson and Toovey. The club will design it’s run from the backline out of Reids hands and he will no doubt respond. His confidence right now is sky high and IMO will be one worth considering.

    Supercoach:
Priced at an average of 66 Reid will be a bargin.

Two scores which have killed his average were the 18 vs Essendon and the 5 vs Geelong.

Reid has shown an ability to score high in SC, with 4 scores above 98. Reid is a long accurate kick (shown when he had 16 possessions at 100% eff) of the footy and one that playing in the backline will see a lot of rebound 50’s. Being in his fourth season at the club he is perfectly positioned to “break out” and average in the 85-90 bracket. Presti retiring at the end of season means Reid is 100% safe in the team.

With Goldsack a trade possibility Reid may take over the kick-ins at Collingwood.

I’m a huge rap for him, I’ll be watching him very closely in the preseason.

    Preseason Articles:

A change of role and the patience of a coaching staff have seen Ben Reid emerge as an exciting addition to the Collingwood backline in 2010. By James Weston.

He was chosen as the Pies’ first round pick that season, the eighth overall selection in a draft that produced Bryce Gibbs, Joel Selwood and Jack Riewoldt. Reid had been a useful junior player at Wangaratta Rovers for a season before joining the Murray Bushrangers. He thrived under coach Peter Dean, and was earmarked as a potential high AFL draft choice after compiling a solid season as a TAC Cup forward.

Reid also earned selection in the underage AIS team that represented Australia against Ireland in the International Rules series; his star was on the ascent, and Collingwood did not hesitate to take him despite Reid being only eligible for the draft deadline by a mere two days. Yet the message preached by the football club was simple: Reid will be an excellent player, as long as supporters remain patient.

“Part of it has been injuries, part of it has been adjusting to the level expected,” Reid explains.

“Even going from Ovens & Murray footy to the TAC Cup was a huge step, and each step from there is equally challenging. So to come here was fantastic, but it has taken some time to adjust to the level and try to play consistent games of football.”

In truth, you can ignore Reid’s first two seasons at the Westpac Centre. As a rookie in 2007, he was blooded for three modest games. Having overcome quadriceps problems to work his way into the senior team in 2008, he broke his foot after just three more games and did not play senior football after Round 13. Hence, 2009 was his first genuine chance to build consistency and form in the VFL, aided by Collingwood’s outright control of its own reserves team.

But a funny thing happened on the way to the goalsquare: instead of making a name for himself as a forward, for which he was first identified then drafted, Reid has become a key position defender. He notes a late 2008 game in the reserves - he was given a final round game at centre half-back to test out his recovery from the broken foot - as a watershed career moment. Reid played with distinction, catching the eye of the coaching staff and suggesting there was more to his abilities than they realised.

Great work favorites, with Harry O'Brien getting All Australian it should mean that even more attention from forward taggers will be placed on him to try and stop the long straight line runs he likes to go on. In RD21 we saw how much O'Brien suffered in RD21 (only scored 28 SC) when he was shut out of the game by Will Young, no doubt the coaches will take note of that game, especially seeing as though Collingwood only managed to beat Adelaide by 3 points. Heath Shaw should still cop a lot of scrutiny from opposition taggers if he is in defence as well so Ben Reid will have to be used as the rebounding option quite regularly given guys like Tyson Goldsack and Alan Toovey are nothing special with their disposal.

The good thing about Reid much like Brian Lake and other tall key position defenders that play on the opposition's key forward each week is they can't be tagged. Reid came on leaps and bounds this year and given he is still pretty young (will be around 22yr 0mth at start of 2011) and the fact next year will be his 5th season on an AFL list he should continue to improve.

His role was clear for everyone to see today. Instead of the pies going for the logical option of Reid on Riewoldt and Brown on Kosi they went the other way so they could use Reids run and carry from the backline.

Not huge numbers today but still managed sc 91, which is very respectable considering his price for next season.

I think 91 SC is a very encouraging score in a grand final (against arguably the best team) for someone as young and finals experienced as Ben Reid. The sign of a very good defender is one that can not only shut down their opponent (i.e. Koschitzke only kicking 1 goal) but one that can also offer decent rebound and drive from defence.

Re: Ben Reid (DEF) - Collingwood

How long is the injury expected to keep him sidelined, i..e will he have a limited pre-season?

I'm surprised considering they had the premiership in the bag in the second/third quarter that Collingwood played him with a broken fibula in the last quarter, seems a bit negligent to me...

No idea yet Stubz, it's likely that he should be ok to go to Arizona. (Mid November)
