Re: Round 1 Teams & rookies info

Quick review on Blues vs Tigers...

Blues - Got stiffed by the umpires in the first 15 minutes, would say that 3 of the Tigers early goals were gifts from bad calls and a couple more that didn't go the other way also hurt them, from about that point on they leveled out the game mostly and then were the better team in quarters 2 and 3. They ran out of puff as you expect from a young team in the last and just couldn't get any penetration but they'll be competitive this year based on this hitout.

Newman - Great role, floating loose, sitting in the pocket for the cheap +6 on kick-ins or taking them and doing his best to play on generally. Looks solid and certainly one to watch, basically can be Docherty lite.

Cripps - Rock solid, faded a bit and got trapped on the bench as the game slipped away in the 4th but did what you'd want.

Simpson - Same as Newman basically, bit higher than Newman to my viewing but same same. Looks good for another strong year.

Walsh - Looks an absolute jet. Ratio not great this one and I think a wee bit harsh but he did have a couple of turnovers and clangers, still I feel safe saying he'll be close to 1:1 on the season and that his DT is closer to what I think he'll do than his SC. Just the gut running and composure are clear.

Fisher - Really solid role, would think he was the 2nd leading CBA to Cripps and was doing some good work. Doesn't get any of the cheap stuff and doesn't hunt tackles (does tackle well in his moments) which caps his DT but think he can push premium numbers in SC especially.

Setterfield - Faded really hard but his role was better than I anticipated, genuine midfield clearance work and was adept at it. Solid on field option with that role.

Gibbons - Solid 2nd quarter that was basically all his points but the rest was rough. He looks so much better the higher up the ground he gets and he works well into space, unfortunately the Blues aren't good at lowering their eyes and taking those easy shorter kicks. My assessment remains the same, slow burn bench rookie unless he starts getting midfield time which would make him a strong on field choice. Think he did enough in the 1%er area to lock his spot for a week more.

Tigers - Free Kick Richmond was very strong in the first quarter, think they were terrible calls as well but good teams take their chances and they did. Not sure how much they took the foot off the throat and how much the Blues lifted but I don't think they'd love the middle quarters. Look a strong side again though, still seem to be better than the sum of their parts which is a credit to the coaching.

Nankervis - Took full advantage of the mismatch, especially pushing hard forward for 3 scrappy goals. Be interesting if he can do this against better rucks.

Houli - Looked really good, especially the first half and then without really standing out he kept it ticking over in the 2nd half. Looks fit.

Higgins - Was basically permanent forward, would think he'll need to kick 2-3 a week to be able to sustain this scoring from that role.

Short - Uncharacteristically bad kicking by him but his role was fine and they're still looking for him. Reckon his DT boost was basically the kick-in rule compared to last year.

Martin - Super generous ratio with the amount of errors he made, actually surprised he only had 7 clangers, very surprised his ratio was positive, felt like he got the broken CP button treatment. He didn't seem to be in the play that much, fair bit of time forward and he certainly looked more like last year than the peak season. His game felt basically the same as Walsh only with more glaring errors which really just confirms the importance of golden tickets in SC.

Lynch - Good first quarter, solid 2nd quarter and then looked like he'd well and truly run his race and was gassed hard. Could be a really decent option if he slowly builds fitness and scores like this consistently early on.

Balta - Literally 18 at qtr time for SC, went backwards the next two quarters to 13 and then back up to 18 to finish. He actually did a few nice things and was in the play all game but just didn't stick a few marks, gave away a few bad FA and just wasn't great in general but does cover ground. Will be interesting to see if he holds his spot, certainly under pressure.

Rance - Early talk is that he has ruptured the ACL, his quote was "doesn't look too good" and Balme after the game also said Doctors suspect it's an ACL so not looking good. I mean even when the "it couldn't happen to a nicer person" applies I still wouldn't wish it on anyone so fingers crossed it's something less major.

Re: Round 1 Teams & rookies info

Glad to see it wasn't just me thinking the umps were junk early.

We got back into it really well until Rance went down. I guess it sapped the momentum a bit (or kicked the Tigers into gear) or could just be young team fading out as you mentioned.

Gibbons certainly frustrating, he was pretty good when he had the ball, just didn't get it to him enough. 71% TOG a bit lower than JLT2.
Balta 52% TOG is a terrible sign.. Not sure why it was so low, I guess just to give Lynch a rest for the most part.

Gibbons had a lot of nearly moments. Few dropped marks, missed a goal, unlucky with a FA etc that add up for the role he's playing.

I'm only going to go with it if I have a natural zero in my team (possibly R3). At this stage I don't have that zero and I don't want to have a non playing back/mid/fwd right now. If I had the zero, I would take the score.

I'm torn, Macrae against Sydney is not ideal, Grundy I think could crush the Cats tonight as well and of course Danger. Leaning towards Macrae though, what's the point of paying 127 for a guy if you're not going to back him in to score that much, right?

Nice work. Certainly supports the idea of Grundy vs Geelong as much as anything and a negative on Macrae confirmed. Also probably a negative on Danger. Can't really take too much from Port ruck with Lycett only being a small part of the WCE factor and obviously not there for Port last year.

Hail storm going through Melbourne at the moment. Also, my internet went down, probably related. Great timing just before lockout.

At least the main comps are rolling lockouts.

Tonight's game is super important though, basically locking your structure in tonight given all the Geelong rookie mids and Grundy.
