The 2018 prelim clearly taught Dimma a lesson. No more Grigg

He might still revert to Grigg when he's available. This would've actually been a decent game for Grigg with Carlton not having a noted 2nd ruck (McKay will probably do it). Looks like they want JRoo and Lynch as full time forwards, which is great.

There was talk of Lynch rucking by Dimma the other day. I still wonder whether he was serious or not with this as I always feel it's risky to put such a good forward into the ruck.

If he was, then it's probably building fitness before he's ready to do so. Hard to see Balta suiting their game style though, they've gone from really only having one key forward in Riewoldt to having 3 given Balta/Nankervis will rotate in the forward line I imagine which will then hurt their forward pressure (which the 6-6-6 will already do).

He is tempting somewhat but do wonder if they'll persist with being tall for long.

Balta probably a good pick for AFLOL. Only need a few games to get his price up.

He might also get moved from Fwd only to R/F in that comp, which would be a double benefit.

Can't believe Richmond named Balta with Lynch.

    Either
    1) Lynch late out, Richmond are just playing us
    2) Balta is out next week, when Carlton upset Richmond due to all their talls

Re: Round 1 Teams & rookies info

They've already said that Lynch will only play 75% TOG this game as they ease him back. Given that it would be a bit hard for him to also be the backup ruckman so I think this game is an anomaly in that Balta is basically playing because Lynch isn't fit and because they're playing Carlton they can afford to do that.

That said, I really liked the look of Balta, just a super active type of player who will find ways to score and may force his way into the team. Kind of reminds me of Mitch McGovern a few years ago for the Crows where his JS was questionable because the team felt too tall but he just kept doing things and forced his way into the team long term, one of those where he could easily Relton Roberts you or he ends up one of the best rookies. The forwards are still so sparse in guys with decent scoring potential that he could be worth the risk.

Pretty much all my structures are designed on minimising forward rookies right now though so I hopefully wont need him and have to make that call. He's probably got the best role of any of the rookies though as a 2nd ruck, that's basically a 40 point baseline for a player of his style if he gets 20-30% ruck time and can do anything up forward.

Interesting game though. Probably will have 2 guys locked in from it and as many as 5 depending on how things play out.

I know Richmond have been basically playing the 1 tall, maybe 2 talls at times over the past few seasons, but I don't really see them being too tall with all 3 up forward. JRoo is a fairly small KPP and great at ground level, Lynch is an aerobic beast when fit who will probably spend as much time pushing up to the wing and hb as he does in the F50 and Balta isn't lumbering either. It's true that the trio may not tackle as well as if they played an extra small but I certainly don't think it's overly tall, especially when you consider that Nank is a smaller, more mobile ruckman.

Re: Round 1 Teams & rookies info

It is an interesting change up from their small ball type of style over 2017-18. But I get the feeling that was more out of necessity and obviously playing to the list's strengths. Now that they have Lynch and a viable third option in Balta they are setting up more traditionally.

I do worry if they lose a couple after this week that they Balta is the first one to go in order to scale down. As successful teams who do change it up tend to always revert back to what they know as they get challenged (Hawthorn 2013 the main exception for mine). But given the struggles I'm facing to get FWD rookies I'm happy with I think I'll be taking him as my EMG score tomorrow night.

    Like father, like son.

Bailey Scott will debut this weekend, 23 years on from when his father, Robert, played in the 1996 premiership.

    Congratulations, Bailey.

Petch is going to play. There is a lot of youth in the front half. Outside of Darling, the majority of the players are 20/21 years old. They’ve been really good over pre-season. Brander plays as well.

“He won’t play. He’s desperate to play and I’m desperate to play him, but the recommendation is that he doesn’t play.”

Adam Simpson declares that Josh Kennedy won’t play round one.

“He will look to play round three. He’s ahead of schedule.”

    Adam Simpson on Jamie Cripps

“He’s in doubt. He presented with some a foot issue yesterday and we’re waiting on the results of some scans.”

    Adam Simpson on Willie Rioli

“Tom will play his first game for the club.”

Simpson declares ruckman Tom Hickey will play against Brisbane.

No, LeCras retired so small fwd spot open which Petrol has grabbed - clearly best option of small fwds on our list, killed preseason.
