Round 1 Teams & rookies info

Thought we better have 1 thread with round 1 teams & any rookie info that becomes available :-

Ken Hinkley confirms Willem Drew, Connor Rozee, Xavier Duursma and Zak Butters will all debut for Port Adelaide on Saturday
Bailey Smith announced to debut for the bulldogs
Jack Lukosious and Chris Burgess to debut this week for the Suns according to Stewy Dew.
GWS draftee Jye Caldwell out for a couple of weeks with a groin issue. No debut for the gun youngster. Jackson Hately almost certain to get his first game now, if he wasn’t pencilled in anyway
Hawthorn: "He's got a lot of work to do (Including conditioning)" Alastair Clarkson on Jack Scrimshaw via @1116sen
    - that is concerning, think I might pass on him.

Re: Round 1 Teams & rookies info

I'm actually a little surprised Bailey Smith is getting a debut this week. Had an achilles injury in the second half of last year and was on a restricted program for most of preseason. Started both JLT games on the bench and came on later. 39% TOG in JLT 1 and 46% TOG in JLT 2 so he's really only played the equivalent of one preseason game.

Fantasy wise I think he's too expensive for the bench and too weak a scorer currently for the field. Getting a game straight away is promising though for his JS and he might end up being a slow burner this year.

I'm surprised as well. I backed Smith at $41, Walsh at $9 when markets opened, so I am pleased he's named early, had almost written him off already

Surely he gets 65%+ TOG, so could potentially score alright? I assume plays forward though.

Re: Round 1 Teams & rookies info

MONTHS of speculation have ended with boom recruit Tom Lynch receiving the all-clear to play his first AFL game for Richmond in Thursday's season-opener against Carlton.

Tigers coach Damien Hardwick told reporters the former Gold Coast captain had proved his fitness after undergoing off-season knee surgery.
I doubt Balta will be picked also now.

Which is a shame, was hoping the masses would pick him.

On Scrimshaw, I saw a quote that Clarko was talking about earlier, with regards to his conditioning. And that everything was tracking nicely now. I’ll see if I can find it.

Surprised Gibbons makes it but good signs for him. Don't think he'll score much above 50 if he's playing the small forward pressure role but like Matthew Wright, he'll have the occasional spike. Back into calculations, particularly if other rookies don't get named.

Think Gibbons is still a nice option personally. Yes deep forward role but a prolific ball winner and tackler in the VFL who could easily find himself better off if the Blues start slow or through injuries.

You don't draft a guy like him if you don't plan on playing him.

Re: Round 1 Teams & rookies info

Gibbons has a role that only really he played during the JLT which is always a good indicator of JS. Throw in that the Blues have a very strong incentive to play their strongest team and win as many games as possible and I think they'll have the kids really having to earn their stripes this year which is a good thing for their development.

I still think his JS isn't great though as they will play the kids who earn it and his role is flat out terrible, he's basically Pickett/Garlett last year role wise but he's unquestionably a better player than them. Honestly think that if he can score like Murphy last year it would be a pretty decent result and anything better than that would be a win. Real question is can he kick a bag or get huge tackle numbers in games to push his score towards 100 as he's probably not going to get much more than 10-15 disposals most weeks just from lack of opportunity.

He's still that rookie I take if there isn't anything else but would rather guys I feel stronger about the scoring potential of.

RICHMOND will unleash a new-look forward line for its season opener against Carlton, with star recruit Tom Lynch to be joined by Mav Weller and debutant Noah Balta at the MCG.

Balta is a second-year man-mountain and is as athletic as champion full-back Alex Rance, according to Tiger coach Damien Hardwick.

The 194cm beast was the 25th pick in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft and has been rewarded for his promising JLT Community Series form.
This post was more than likely SC based.
If in doubt, assume it was.

Balta gets a game with Lynch. Good sign but I’m still not convinced.

Tempted by Balta, think he might be in the team while Lynch gets match fitness. Probably don’t want to throw him in the ruck straight away. It’s him or Parker and the latter doesn’t seem like much of a scorer.

No Soldo means Balta will definitely pinch hit in the ruck which can only be a positive for his scoring
