2018 AFL Draft
Some significant changes to the AFL Draft this year.
Live pick trading will be introduced
Draft will be held over two days, with Day 1 being the Top 10 picks.
The second day will have the rest of the national draft, the preseason and rookie drafts.
Draft this year will be held at Etihad Stadium, in part due to the ability for teams to use the private boxes to work out draft trading if needed.
Some recent form guides on draftees:
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-08-0...m-guide-august
http://www.espn.com.au/afl/story/_/i...-forwards-rise
Both of the above are overall rankings, not where they expect them to be drafted.

Re: 2018 AFL Draft
Yeah, seems stupid to me, I'd want it to be at least the first round. Can only assume they want a 2-3hr type draft show for the first night and then come back during the day for the second part. Given that in the last few years the top 10 picks have been made about an hour before the draft itself starts, it's basically just a jumper presentation ceremony for the non-finalists.

On the plus side, for the first time in our history, Adelaide will pick first on Draft Day.

Re: 2018 AFL Draft
Article on AFL site is suggesting the whole first round on the opening night, rather than just top 10. Would be a better move if true.

Re: 2018 AFL Draft
Copying the NFL structure without doing any of the buildup or hype that is needed and without the whole college football lead-in.
Just a pointless waste of logistics to have to do it over 2 days.
Live trading is good though.

Re: 2018 AFL Draft
Would love it if the U18 carnival had more ways to watch it live and if the draft combine, or at least the skills/fitness part of it also had coverage. Could use the downtime between activities to do in depth profiles of some of the potential draftees (starting with most likely to be drafted). Would then also allow new draftees to have a higher profile, which might allow them to earn sponsorship deals in the first couple of years. The main negative of this system is that with higher profile usually comes higher pressure.

Re: 2018 AFL Draft
Just 2 days away now and the AFL Draft Machine is up and running http://www.afl.com.au/draft/draft-machine with a $10k prize going to whoever gets all 10 right and has the best answer to the question about which draftee they want to see at their club and why.
Phantom Drafts are starting to come in now, with Twomey from the AFL site posting his.
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-11-2...-phantom-draft
With bid matching and trading, it should be more complicated than usual, don't worry about trying to pick which clubs take which picks, just match the pick number to the player that gets taken then.

Re: 2018 AFL Draft
Two main rumours surrounding draft picks tomorrow.
1. Port have been trying (unsuccessfully) to get into the top 3 and guarantee themselves one of Lukosius or Rankine, assuming Carlton take Walsh. GC refusing to budge at this stage.
2. If Rozee is available at the WB pick #7, Dogs are open to trading with the two SA clubs to enable the SA club to take Rozee in exchange for 2 picks before any expected bids on West. I think part of that is that West has seemingly slipped down the order and also partly due to some interstate clubs having reservations about taking Bailey Smith.

Re: 2018 AFL Draft
There's also an interesting possible trade scenario that's been brought up. Currently Adelaide have pick 16, GWS 19 and WCE 20. There's some suggestion from Cal Twomey that Ade will bid for Biggs (GWS academy) with that pick 16. If so, it's possible that GWS could trade 19 to WCE for something like a 2019 Rd 1 pick. Then match the bid using their next pick(s) 25 and a little of 52 (getting back 60). Then after matching the bid, WCE could trade pick 20 for that same 2019 Rd 1 pick.
The pick numbers themselves will change based on earlier bids that are likely to come for Blakey, Thomas and Quaynor.

Re: 2018 AFL Draft
Arent Dogs keen on Smith though?
I guess Port's 10 may work assuming Adelaide and GWS wouldnt pick him.
Still hoping we have something lined up with GC to get 3. We didnt want to let Francou break his contract and then we suddenly did and did a strange pick 70s swap. At least that's what I'm clutching my straws at.

Re: 2018 AFL Draft
Pretty sure we are keen on Smith. Both he and Ben King have been at the club in the past week. Think it's more if we think other clubs are hesitant on him. Suspect trades end up not getting done early.
