    Re: Round 3

Fairly confident the afl.com.au lineups have come early again for one game so far (especially as the outs have omitted/injured)

IN: Tory Dickson, Jack Redpath, Mitch Wallis
OUT: Jordan Roughead (Injured), Lukas Webb (Omitted), Jackson Trengove (Injured)

EMERGENCIES: 17 Tom Boyd, 18 Fletcher Roberts, 19 Lukas Webb, 24 Shane Biggs

OUT: Kyle Langford (Omitted), Michael Hartley (Omitted), Josh Begley (Omitted)

EMERGENCIES: 36 Michael Hartley, 44 Shaun McKernan, 4 Kyle Langford, 16 Josh Begley

Nothing too fantasy relevant there except Roberts isn't back in (Naughton).

Big out for Bris, Zorko really the only one left and now a big chance to get tagged by Ebert. Hogan will love Tarrant being out. Scott Thompson will have his work cut out today.

I think you gotta take Murphy there, Naughton could go anywhere from 30-70 IMO so you stand to lose way more than you gain.

    Re: Round 3

So watched a couple of the games from last week on the plane... massive disclaimer as the quality is absolute horseshit so it's like watching Pacman football, thanks AFL for downloading in what I can only guess is 33k format instead of at least watchable...

Swans vs Giants - Seesaw battle this one, basically the team that got on top of the clearances for a period would kick a bunch of goals and then it would reverse, was a weird game where ultimately the Swans took their chances and the Giants burned theirs and that enabled the Swans to get on top. Was a surprisingly low pressure affair which was surprisingly, given the result, played on the Giants terms.

Swans - Did nothing special other than kick straight, take advantage of poor transition defense and capitalise on turnovers. Intensity was very lacking though and were lucky the Giants were even worse at this area as they just didn't want to attack the footy.

Sinclair - Much better game from him, really exploited his huge advantage in experience over Patton and Lobb before he got hurt. Pushed forward to kick a bag and was much better with his ruck work, great response to the stinker last week. I think he's fools gold right now with having faced Lycett, Dixon/Westhoff and Patton/Lobb so far but who knows.

Franklin - Great game from him, pushed right up the ground basically playing at CHF knowing that Davis will let him do what he wants as long as he's 70m from goal and exploited his great kicking to set up teammates. Then kicked two crucial late goals, the first of which was sensational, to seal the game. Ratio seemed pretty rough to me but based on the stats they graded a lot of his kicks ineffective that weren't marked cleanly which held him back.

Kennedy - Solid again but once again I think we have too many cooks in there and this is the consequence.

Heeney - One of the cooks, his role was significantly better this week, imo. Plenty of clearance work where he is at his best and can score. I think this was largely due to Reid being in the side so him going back out is a bit of a concern to me but given the lack of other forwards scoring that's not a huge deal if he can keep up the first fortnight.

Lloyd - Solid enough outing for him. Giants put a lot of work into McVeigh though so in that regard it's a bit disappointing that he didn't capitalise on his competition being targeted.

Hanners - Looked solid and building into the season, one to watch for a potential big second half as he builds fitness.

Parker - Not sure what happened here really, just didn't find a lot of the ball. Didn't notice any specific attention or anything, perhaps just the lack of contested footy in the game in general or the additional Heeney midfield time held him back.

McVeigh - Copped a lot of attention from the Giants with Perryman in particular shadowing him a lot early in the game.

Mills - Great game, one day he's going to do this week in, week out or he'll move to the midfield and go next level. He's almost an underwhelming player at this point given how good he's shown he can be and what he dishes up on the regular and the vast gap between the two.

    Giants -
They butchered their chances, the Taranto one was the highlight but they had a good 10 other shots that should have been goals with several not even scoring. Ball use in general was just shocking to be honest and given they had it on their terms of a soft outside type of game that's a surprise.

Patton - Didn't really notice his impact, had a few good clearances but outside of that was a shock how well he did score, again 10 tackles will do that I guess.

Coniglio - Was probably the classiest player other than Heeney on the field for mine, one of the few who hit his teammates and took chances and was a beast in the air for the Giants. He looks great.

Kelly - Didn't get near it, groin would explain it to be honest.

Shaw - One of the chief butchers. His score got hammered because a lot of his mistakes led to goals. Role was there though.

Whitfield - Copped a very hard tag, for Sydney at least, basically had Hewett or Jack glued to him at all times, tag team effort to counter his endurance obviously and also explains both their low scores, they had no interest in anything but stopping Whitfield.

Finlayson - Didn't use the ball as well as previous weeks but still one of their best. Still think he can push 90ish in SC and be a borderline keeper option, everything is just right about his game, intercept ability, long brilliant kicking and taking kickins in a good side.

Taranto - Had a stinker to be honest. Started well but his role relies on good ball movement a bit and they didn't have it.

Cameron - Had an almost game, he had half those 10 shots I mentioned above, gave away some crucial free kicks and just almost tore the game apart but ultimately was probably a liability for the Giants. Weird game.

Haven't bothered with any of the non-relevant guys for mine as there are too many cooks in that Giants midfield for Ward or Shiel to get there but both were far from great (Ward's score a shock).

    Re: Round 3

Saints vs Crows - What a truly weird game. The Saints kind of dominated the first 2.5 quarters of the game but they kicked so incredibly badly that they lost that period on the scoreboard and then they just broke mentally when the Crows kicked a couple and they took their bat and ball and went home to cop another thrashing.

Crows - One of their least impressive games of the past couple of years as they just looked to be trying to find ways to lose it but in the end they got the win and can move on from there.

Gibbs - Brutal ratio, he dominated and used the ball better than just about anyone. Sometimes I really don't understand the SC scoring system...

Laird - Solid game for him. Par for the course really.

Seedsman - Really got going late when the game was over but had built a solid base up until that point as well to keep it ticking over. Certainly worth considering still, he's basically got a merged Smith/BRouch role going right now, not really playing half back but still sweeping for the running rebound but also on the wing for plenty of receives.

Jacobs - Really struggled to take advantage of Acres and Marshall in the ruck. These are the games that hold him back from hitting super premium levels, when he should get 140 he gets 80.

Sloane - Had Dunstan working him over at stoppages and once again showed that he doesn't really have a string in his bow that beats taggers. The "good" sign is that the Crows basically used it against the Saints and just went to everyone else knowing that Sloane could just create space, if the team keeps beating the tag like that then teams will stop as it's pretty wasteful to tag a decoy but would certainly be better if Sloane would just learn to beat them himself. Still, watch this space as he's dirt cheap now and have to consider if he gets a run against teams that wont tag.

Murphy - Was solid again even if his best play from a SC perspective was an accident. Injury is a shame but should come back in given what he's giving them up forward.

Doedee - He's a stud. I find it hard to believe that he wasn't already better than Lever last year but I guess the Crows managed to leverage the BT hype train into maximum return on Lever knowing they had an upgrade in the wings. He's got to be favourite for the Rising Star right now.

It's amazing how few fantasy relevant Crows there are...

Saints - As much as the Eagles missed NicNat last year, they might miss Roo more which is just crazy to me. Their kicking was abhorrent, the worst I've seen in a long time, they probably should have kicked 17.3 based on where the shots were from and had another dozen or so that didn't even score and their goal kicking was their "better" forward half kicking, their inside 50s were just atrocious and it's a symptom of who they seem to want kicking the ball inside 50 based on their structures. They've got Billings and Gresham playing as deep forward targets so that a horde of butchers can have the I50 kick instead and they've got Savage and Webster playing so deep in defense that they can rarely make the I50 kick either. Basically they've taken their best kicks and made sure that they'll be the guys kicking it inside 50 as infrequently as possible, it's actually a mindblowingly stupid strategy and they deserve to be 0-3 on the back of it.

Ross - Example one of a butcher being a preferred kicker, give Billings those midfield minutes and he'll find as much ball only he'll give you 5 goals on a plate instead of the opponents...

Savage - Great game from him but he's so deep in defense that his impact is being negated by his own side, would love to see his R50 numbers but felt like 15 of his kicks must have been those. Could/Should have kicked 2 goals as well so even he butchered it when in the forward half. They need him higher up the ground though as he's one of the few who can hit targets and they can do the rebound without him.

Dunstan - Another butcher or perhaps the better term is waster for him. He never looks to attack, he's actually afraid to kick it forwards at this point so he turns and kicks backwards which means whoever does have the I50 kick eventually is kicking into a minefield. Tagged Sloane effectively but the Crows just exploited that.

Steven - Another butcher, I love what he does but his kicking is just dreadful.

Newnes - For an allegedly elite kicker he also butchered just about everything.

Sinclair - Another who got great midfield minutes so he could butcher the crap out of it and take their forwards out of the game.

Marshall - I really liked the look of him, held his own in the ruck and was excellent around the ground. If he's not already better than Longer and Hickey (who are rubbish, lets be honest) then I know nothing. He's no worse than those two in the ruck and he's an insane amount better around the ground. One to watch as an expensive rookie downgrade target if he can hold the lone ruck role, no reason he can't score 80+ on this game and justify the premium.

Acres - Amazing ratio because he was yet another butcher for the Saints. He should have kicked 4.0 on a bad day so to have 1.3 is actually amazing. He did read it well and get into the play but the way he used it in the forward half almost made that a detriment to the side.

Coffield - That the debutant was basically the only guy to show any class is a worry, perhaps they haven't "sainted" him yet and taught him that kicking to the opponent is the way of the red, white and black... Looks a very strong downgrade target with a strong role and natural fantasy game.

Webster - Same deal as Savage, they need to find a way for him to be kicking it inside 50 instead of rebound 50. Get him at least on the HBF instead of the BP or even the wing. His kicking is ridiculous in a good way and he carries the ball to break lines.

Carlisle - Waaambulance. Sooked all game. To be fair I'd sook it if I kept beating my man like he did, getting it to a teammate and then watching them hack it to pieces with a cleaver only to have to defend again...

Roberton - Surprised by his ratio being poor, it felt like he was everywhere. Either way, he's good enough as a rebounder to be able push Savage and Webster higher and actually attack opposition defenses with quality kicks.

Billings - Ultimately he's the victim of awful coaching. How he's stuck in a forward pocket is beyond me. He's their best ball user by hand and foot and his own team is limiting his exposure to the ball. While most teams want their best users to have it the Saints seem opposed to the idea. I've got major concerns because I see no reason that a midfield full of renowned butchers is going to stop being butchers and a coach who looks completely out of his depth without the Riewoldt security blanket forward link man is going to work out that winning the ball only matters if you then kick it to your own team... On top of the coach effectively handicapping him, he got robbed of 4 quality touches from his teammates giving away free kicks just as he won the pill which was brutal to cop...

    Armitage - Still looks fat...

    Re: Round 3

Yeah that was a shocker from us, the kind of game where you're just glad to have got the four points. Saints were definitely the better looking side in the first half, but they are utterly impotent in front of goal. I was happy to grind it out in the second half, we're still a much different side compared to where we were this time last year. A lot of players are banged up or out of the side completely due to injury.

On Sloane, whilst I agree that he still can't reliably beat the tag. He's pretty clearly banged up after his round 2 ankle injury. I wouldn't be expecting massive scores for a few weeks while he gets over that.

Watch him knock out a 150 now that I've said that.
