Rayner 1 as expected, Brayshaw at 2 the first slight surprise. Still expecting LDU and Dow to go 3 and 4, which might leave Cerra going to Freo anyway.

    Re: 2017 AFL Draft

Interesting draft, feel like there's arguably a lot of winners.

Port, Ess, Hawks did well with little picks they had.
Tigers and Cats prob the biggest winners with great picks even though highest was 17.
Saints / Blues / Freo all had two top 10 picks, so hard to stuff that up.
Pies did well with all three picks imo too.
North got a steal with LDU at 4.... Possibly Crows with Fogarty at 12 too.

Can't say too enthused about Gold Coast, Swans, Dees or GWS picks.

Also Garlett was a bit of a surprise. Pick 15 3 years ago, brother was terminally ill last year so GC released him (had a 2 year contract extension on the cards).
Brother made a miraculous recovery apparently.
Can't help but feel GC might be annoyed we took him, but it was the last pick of the draft so I guess we gave them a chance to re-draft.

    Re: 2017 AFL Draft

Thought the Swans did a great job. Ball use and speed are glaring weaknesses for the squad and getting a couple of HBF types should enable us to release Mills and Jones into pure midfield roles to get Mills' elite ball usage into the forward half and Jones' ability to create openings with his dash similarly at the scoring end. McCartin is a good stash to replace Buddy in the long term, give him 3 years to develop and he can be great.

I'd have loved to have gotten Higgins with our first pick but obviously the coaching staff really rate Hayward and Florent to grow into our small forwards even though I don't think either was great as first year guys (both look more like midfielders than forwards long term, or even HBF to be honest). I think that small forward was really the only glaring hole in the list that should have been addressed but ultimately if Ling and Stoddart can push the likes of Cunningham and Sinclair out of the side and allow us to use Jones and Mills in their natural positions then that will be a great result. If they allow us to push Horse out of the coaches box that would be the perfect result but I've given up on that dream.

Dockers a surprise but I love the Brayshaw pick, think the draft perennially overrates speed and potential at the expense of genuine ball winning ability. It feels like to me for every Dangerfield where the raw physical skills eventually translate to a footballer there are 3 Parker, Mitchell or M. Crouch types where being an elite player their entire life continues into the AFL even though they get picked really late.

Eagles draft continues me being completely baffled for where they think the list is at. KP players to me were the one area they absolutely didn't need to address in the near term. They did address a couple of needs but I just have no idea why they went KPF and KPD with their top 2 picks when those are their only elite positions already and only Kennedy is over 25 of the guys they're playing there. Just weird. Did like their Brayshaw pick also, genuine Priddis potential with that one of recruiting an A grade human.

Lots of players being re-rookied or rookied after delisting at the same club.

    Some to change clubs are:
    Matt Shaw -Carlton
    Lindsay Thomas - Port
    Dylan Buckley - GWS
    Stewart Crameri - Geel

Probably missing some more in there too.

Ade take Jackson Edwards as promised under father-son.

Could be a direct replacement for S Docherty. Could be gold for fantasy this season.

O'Shea had a great year in Northern Blues & think we were always going to take him even before Doc's season.

He will play some games this year (4-8 imo) but won't be given a crack early I don't think. Williamson to become the rebounder (Simmo will help him out and share the ball between them.)
We could even send Dow back there to help him develop.
O'Shea will be for when we have injuries or rests to Plowman / Marchbank / Williamson etc.
I also think he's more of an actual defender (2nd or 3rd tall, similar to Marchbank) and won't be given big offensive responsibilities like Doc had.

Mullett is more likely to fill that role.

I'm with AT that Williamson or even Byrne (not sure where he is with his recovery but he looked really good as a rookie) would get first crack at that role but I daresay they'll just share the load more on the rebounding front. Does make Simpson a very interesting option though, he's already a pretty solid option even with Doch there but have to think he is their #1 rebounder again without Doch even if they do want to get some of the kids involved.

Think Cripps and Simpson are just about the only Blues who aren't rookies that are really worth looking at this year. Murphy with a flawless preseason probably has to get some consideration after last year but durability always looms in the background with him. Maybe someone like Matt Kennedy could also come into consideration with FWD status.
