    Re: Back Rookies

One other to monitor here, was having a chat with a Dees mate of mine, looking at their side for round 1 based on what the AFL.com.au and Herald Sun journos put up today.

Up against St Kilda with Bruce, McCartin, Membrey and Riewoldt, with Frost out injured, playing just the two McDonald boys and possibly Garland, reckon there is a good chance that Joel Smith gets a game there.

So I am running 3 premos/ 3 rookies - Marchbank, McGrath & Hampton. They are about the only 3 I am confident in to score decently each week.
FWIW I'm pretty comfortable with EVW and T.Stewart. Both averaged around the 70 mark in the VFL last season. Would be expecting 55+, which I think is good enough for D6.

Otten yeah I agree is risky. That Crows side it's possinly too likely he drops out and never returns again. He might be one whom it's better to trade in if he's flying. Could be a tough call.

One other option for SC, which I'm certainly warming to, is to pick Mitch Hibberd even if not named round one. Bench mid rookies look weak for depth, he offers the loopholes for the early rounds. Particularly if you paired him with McGrath, one if def, one in mids.

    Re: Back Rookies

I said it in the JLT thread I don't see where Otten fits in if Cheney & Lever are available for round one.

I'm expecting Lever to be ready and Cheney played SANFL on the weekend so Otten has an incredibly short leash.

If he plays well it'll be really interesting to see what we do.

    Re: Back Rookies

McGrath reminds me of Mills from what I saw in juniors and expect his role in seniors. Would think that Bombers would break him in similarly. My big question is if he is in the side round 1 or they make him earn it a bit, from memory Woosha was hard on kids with the Eagles for the most part and made them earn it but I might be imagining it.

Rookie backs look solid for options this year, will probably role with 5 or 6 again this year.

On Melican @Bunga there was a swans.com article that suggested he's a very decent chance to play but he's a young KPD with pretty rubbish scoring potential I'd have thought. Would be the typical R8 only if needed type, imo.

I was thinking of running Hibberd in the midfield, but I now realise that's completely pointless, because I have no other B/C.
This post was more than likely SC based.

    Confirmed ACL for Garland.

As PVC mentioned I think Joel Smith plays round 1 now considering how tall the Saints are and should be his spot to lose. Really liked the look of him in the demons JLT match I saw.

Also noted this from the article :-

Stewart is in line to make his AFL debut along with draftee Brandan Parfitt, while former Carlton defender Zach Tuohy is expected to play his first game for the Cats.

CARLTON is expected to blood two debutants for its season-opening clash with Richmond on Thursday night, with Sam Petrevski-Seton and surprise inclusion Harrison Macreadie set to line up for the Blues.

The pair are likely to be joined by all four of the club’s off-season recruits, with Caleb Marchbank, Jarrod Pickett, Billie Smedts and Rhys Palmer also primed to feature.
Wouldn't pick him, he'll look likely for games when Weitering is forward, which is basically anytime the opposition only has 2 tall forwards or less.

Not bashing Richmond, but they're tall forward line is as bad as ours (Riewoldt and Griffiths and that's it?) so this will be one of the few games where this would happen I'd say.
Possibly against a team like Port Adelaide too I guess.

Would depend greatly on his role. Would think with reduced preseason that he's likely to start out as a HFF/Pocket type and he's not a dissimilar talent to someone like Heeney who was a 66/70 type as a rookie. So reckon he's in that 60-70/65-75 as a half forward if he plays the full game and isn't managed through it. Think you can add 10 to those numbers if he did play a midfield role.

Given the rookie midfield options he's certainly an option and I'd say he's the most reliable starting choice there outside SPP (feel like I'm talking about wine with these letter combos!) and he's probably worth the premium for those starting two midfield rookies but it's just really hard to tell what his role will be, he could be the forward pocket in which case drop 10 off those averages type scenario.

Kid can play though and reckon he could be a good slow burner of a rookie as he finds his feet. The quad injury and no preseason action is a genuine concern though, lots of players come back from quads too early and I'd worry that round 1 probably qualifies as that for him.

I'd say that by virtue of Riewoldt alone that puts Richmond's tall forwards on a different level, even if I'm not particularly enthused by Griffiths.

Are you still bullish on Marchbank's scoring potential?

    Re: Back Rookies

Not AT obviously, but he went at 57 DT in 3 WAFL senior games in 2015.

Last season solely at WAFL Colts level for 92dt/123sc, which aren't huge numbers given quality of opposition. U18 champs was 78.5/93 which are better.

He had a down season though last year, he's better than that.

He's not a huge scorer, but he's classy.
