Jarrod Berry out for 6 weeks with a knee op at the Lions. Probably makes him a downgrade target.

BRISBANE Lions' draftee Jarrod Berry will miss six weeks after undergoing knee surgery.

Berry, taken at pick 17 in last year's NAB Draft, is expected to be available for the start of the season.

The inside midfielder, who turns 19 on Sunday, has battled a knee complaint for most of his first pre-season.

The surgery is considered minor, however.

Berry was the Lions' second pick in the national draft, behind his close mate and No.3 selection Hugh McCluggage.

    Re: Back Rookies

Starting to look really healthy in defender rookies stocks this season

    Hampton (ADE)
    Vickers (NORTH)
    T Stewart (GEE)
    N Newman (SYD)
    Otten (ADE)
    Scharenberg (COLL)
    Mitch Hibberd (NORTH)
    Joel Smith (MEL)
    Z Guthrie (GEE)

please add more if there any.
Will be likely fielding 3 starting and 2 rookies out this lot.

    Re: Back Rookies

Think it might be similar to last year if we can get 6 good ones I reckon I might go with 2 super premium guys (Doch and Laird probably my favourites) and load up with 6 rookies if possible. Think, I'm going to have a pretty funky starting side compared to most though so who knows!

    Re: Back Rookies

Think it's worth mentioning Caleb Marchbank in this thread.

    Roughly $230k in both comps.

    JLT 1 - 85DT/76SC - 18 tocuhes, 10 marks.
    JLT 2 - 56DT/86SC - 17 touches, 5 marks.
    JLT 3 - 88DT/85SC - 22 touches, 7 marks.

Looks like he's certainly locked down a spot in Carltons best 22.

Thought he played really well against Fremantle, likes getting involved in the link up stuff behind play and won't take the best forward. Reads the play well, took a few intercept marks from memory.

Paying a pretty hefty premium for a rookie but he's certainly a guy to consider if you're looking at starting 3 or even 4 rookies on the field in defence.

    Re: Back Rookies

Yeah he's locked into my team, the only Carlton player I will 100% have (but Pickett will be in my team assuming he's named Round 1 too.)

Pretty similar to Weitering last year in that you are paying a little more but job security is locked down and he should score well. I'll have him, Hampton and one more rookie on the field so think it's the way to go if starting 3+ rookies as you mentioned.

Definitely won't get the best forward (or probably even the 2nd best) as they'll give any huge power forwards to Rowe or Weitering (if playing down back, still not sure.)

Will be interesting to see how they use Weitering this year, I thought he looked very good playing forward against Freo.

@Wogitalia - thoughts on Lewis Melican playing round 1?

Seen him play a couple of times now & looks very solid. Guessing Aliir Aliir's fitness is the question mark regarding his job security.

We may just need to go with where we need him more, which is up forward. Although with Curnow back, we might not be as deficient as we have looked.

I think with Richmond only having Riewoldt and one of Griffiths/Chol (probably Griffths), it wouldn't surprise me if Weitering is forward is Round 1, with him moving back for games where the opposition has three proper tall forwards.

Not Wogi obviously, but his NEAFL stats last year suggest he won't be worth picking even if named round 1.
Pretty sure it was a sub 40 DT average.

    Re: Back Rookies

I'm not as keen on the rookies here as some others. Questionable job security and scoring potential means I'm thinking of Marchbank and Hampton as D5 and D6.

Much prefer the rookies up forward.

Good question. He's definitely more SC suited. He'll be used a lot to link up though so I would expect some uncontested marks, possibly!
