I think there are enough forward options you can put a number into the midfield and fill up on other forward rookies.

Something that might hurt is someone like Keays could play round 1 and then lose his spot when Zorko returns the following week.

I guess with D.Beams being out indefinitely it opens up another spot we were expecting to be taken.

Aided further by half the backs also being forwards...

This might be the first year where there is legit cause to break the unspoken rule of always picking guys at the worst position. Somehow the midfield rookies just don't exist this year.

Great news, fingers crossed for them both coming through unscathed!

Yeah, this. It would be great to see them both run out for the Dees in round 1.

Wouldn't they be available round 2 at the earliest if playing in the hitout coinciding with round 1?

Unless I'm reading that or your post wrong which was more a statement that it would have been great to see them both run out for round 1, in which case I agree

And you wouldn't think they would be straight back in, round 3 at the earliest I'd assume.

    Re: Midfield Rookies

Yeah that's it, the question is whether you're brave enough to start with one of them without knowing when they'll come into the AFL side. I get the feeling Petracca could play before Trengove but that's more of a gut feel, @Devo might have a better guess as he probably knows how both of their pre seasons have gone a little better than myself.

If one was to be in the AFL squad by round 2/3 then I think I'd start with one of them because only getting 2-3 price rises out of whoever I'd downgrade to get one of them isn't really enough and if copping a zero for a couple of weeks meant I wouldn't have to grab someone I think might be out of the side after a few weeks I think it might be the better bet.

Hopefully they get three games in the twos to warm up, can't see Melbourne taking any risks on either of them.

    Re: Midfield Rookies

Doubt I would start with them if not named r1.
If they start r2/3 they would be perfect sideways trade to get rid of any dead rookies you end up with.

    Re: Midfield Rookies

Petracca is useful as a loophole in SC at least so could be the guy to start with if going down that path but tend to agree otherwise not really worth starting them, there's always someone like Jed Anderson last year that most start with and fails entirely.

Petracca and Trengove are playing in a VFL practice match v Port Melbourne this weekend. It will be Petracca's first game of any sort for well over a year and Trengove's first in over 2 years, so hopefully they enjoy themselves and gets through. While I think Petracca's timetable is a little ahead of Trengove, I'd be surprised to see Petracca named for round 1. There's two fantasy uses for Petracca now - either you stash him on your bench in the hope that he plays in round 2 or 3, or he is your first downgrade target after your rooks have had a few price rises. Wouldn't be surprised at all if Petracca plays a few VFL games first in order to get his match fitness up and also to keep the expectations and hype in check.

Note that Brayshaw and Lumumba will also play v Port Melbourne, so I reckon that will make Oliver's path to a round 1 debut a bit tougher.

After seeing Lumumba last season, I wouldn't be in any rush to bring him back into the team.
