All discussion to do with Midfield Rookies.

Note: If you are talking about a player for only one competition please state if it is for DT or SC.

    Re: Midfield Rookies

    No discussion here yet.

Ben Keays and Polkinghorne probably seem the obvious picks. Who else is everyone looking at, obviously still early days without the NAB cup scores.

Plenty of DPP rookies as well from what I can see.

    Re: Midfield Rookies

Jarrad Jansen 192cm and 93kg who is now at the lions - did not play a senior game for the Cats but was named as an emergency last year and finished runner-up in the Cats' VFL best and fairest.

David Cuningham at the blues - stoppage/clearance specialist that has speed. With Judd gone, could be ideal to partner with Cripps allowing Murphy & Gibbs to play more as first receivers.
Article from last week very positive :-
    http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/af...59c73ee86396c7

“But I think you will see a few of the young guys playing. David Cuningham has been exceptional. “Cuningham is an inside midfielder with real speed and a real capacity to win the ball in the contest. He has a nice step and explosive speed.

“He has looked remarkably comfortable from the day he walked in here. He has been as impressive as anyone.”

Jade Gresham from the saints, Rhys Mathieson from the lions & Mitchell Hibberd from the roos (def/mid) others that are on the radar.

    Re: Midfield Rookies

Early days obviously but I have my eye on the following besides Keays and Polkinghorne:

Daniel Wells and Sam Kerridge are no-brainers if fit and named round 1. They also have the DPP link to the forwards.

Rhys Mathieson from Brisbane is getting hype as a TAC-level ball magnet from the Geelong Falcons Footy Factory. Whether he's best 22 remains to be seen.

Darcy Parish is assumed to have an opportunity at Essendon with all the suspensions. Sounds like he's tracking well. His numbers at TAC and U18 Champs are similar to those of Mathieson.

Jade Gresham from St Kilda. Enormous numbers at TAC and U18 Champs. Seems to do everything - disposals, marks, tackles, goals, clearances, etc. No idea on JS or role at this point but I hope to the heavens that he gets a run early based on the numbers and the early training reports are encouraging.

Callum Mills from Sydney and Jacob Hopper from GWS also have some good junior numbers behind them, but JS and role could be an issue for them.

Freeman now at the Saints another one strongly on the radar.

Morabito very high on the list also if he can stay on the park.

    Ditto Trengove.

Gore is worth watching at the Crows to see if he can break in.

    Macaffer also worth watching closely.

    Re: Midfield Rookies

Interesting that there aren't any absolute locks at this stage in terms of the pure mids, it's the DP mids that might end up stronger. Been a while since that's happened.

Kerridge is probably the strongest prospect if you include fitness and job security.

I think we'll find enough to fill those 4-5 spots, probably more an issue of getting the right ones in before Round 3.

In terms of the Dogs, Josh Dunkley is tracking well, but wouldn't expect him to get many games until later in the year, if not next season.

Didn't Freeman do his hammy again?

    Re: Midfield Rookies

Would be surprised if Freeman starts the year after his last hammy.

    Guys I'm looking at:
Sam Menegola - 115 DT average in the WAFL last season is pretty much enough said
Ryan Davis - Suns rookie, ex Eagles. Is 26 years old so should be very ready to go. The Suns do however recruit for depth as well. 100 DT average in the WAFL last season.
Adam Marcon - Richmond rookie, 97 DT average in the VFL. Expecting he won't start the season, and could be used in a run-with role, but massive watch for downgrade target.
Josh Smith - Pies rookie. Very much doubt he will be in rd 1 side, but a massive 113 DT average in the NEAFL last season so certainly one to watch.
Brayden Fiorini - GC's 2nd rounder in the draft. Strong magnet capabilities with 127 DT average in the TAC cup.

Plus a few of the guys mentioned already Keays, Cuningham, Gresham, Jansen. Matthew Kennedy probably also cheap enough for consideration at GWS.
And maybe pick one of the three expensive draftees in Parish, Mills or Hopper.

Overall think there is only OK depth there. Not as deep as the defenders. Could potentially be great scorers if the stars align, but really think Menegola is the only one of the potentially big scoring mature agers that I think will be in the rd 1 side.

    Re: Midfield Rookies

I get the feeling this year we'll be running an extra mid premium given the value in the forwards, the depth of rookies in each line and lack of confidence in premiums in other lines.
Just in my initial draft sides I've put together I've got 5 premo mids plus 1 or 2 of the value mids (Liba, Crouch, Jom, etc) and only starting 1-2 rookies.

    Re: Midfield Rookies

Yeah Sam Menegola is one I meant to mention - In just 12 games, Menegola, playing as an inside midfielder rather than the tagging roles to which he'd become accustomed, dominated the competition enough to finish third in the Sandover Medal in the WAFL. He averaged 27 disposals per game and racked up 30 and a goal in Subiaco's grand final win over West Perth.

Read that he came 2nd in the cats time trial during week :-
    http://www.geelongcats.com.au/news/2...s-in-timetrial

There was little movement at the top after the first gruelling test in December with gun athlete Mark Blicavs and mature-age recruit Sam Menegola taking first and second place at Geelong College's senior campus.Menegola, pick No.66 in last year's draft, is an outstanding endurance athlete and pushed the 2015 Carji Greeves medallist the whole way.

    Re: Midfield Rookies

I don't think Gore starts for us. If anyone new is breaking in it's Milera at the expense of Menzel.

Freeman is like Trengove and Morabito. If he's available by round 1 I'm probably picking him.

Menegola losing the time trail is more interesting than anything, he used to dominate them at Freo, just shows how absurd Blitz is as an athlete.

I think the big thing this year is how many of the top guys are DPP, really suits that there are so many strong premium/midprice options in the mids so you can take the rookies in their preferred positions.

Not sure if it's still floating around or not, but there was a video of Blitz with a camera on his back doing a time trial. Absolutely destroyed everyone unsurprisingly

Yeah he did it last year too and smashed everyone. Walker came second who is also extremely fit.
