Collins probably only relevant in SC.

Obviously this is coming from Sanderson rather than within the club, but Sando sees him as slotting straight into the side.

Not sure about his fantasy numbers. I'd expect they would be pretty low but the comments on intercept marks and improved kicking are worth noting for SC.

Finishing fourth for intercept marks at the Under-18 Championships and claiming the clean hands test at the draft combine were evidence of his vast improvement."He's an intercept marker and he got better and better at getting his hands on the footy and providing some offensive drive," Sanderson said
"He really improved his kicking, too, so it's testament to his rise, as a lot of recruiters wouldn't have seen him as a top 30 pick at the start of the season.

    Re: Back Rookies

There's been plenty of talk about the forward and mid rooks being reasonable at this early stage of the season. We've even got the great Dan Currie to sit on the ruck bench again. But outside of the Essendon mature agers like Hartley, there's been little talk about the back rookies at all. Is there any reason to be concerned or do we just chill until the NAB reveals the jewels?

Think we should be fine. Essendon look set to provide 3 with Francis (expensive), Hartley and Brown and I'd think Ashby is at least a solid chance also. Might just be a case where we have to pay a bit more than base price on some but with a good 3 from Essendon you really only need to dig up 1 or 2 more from the other clubs.

I like Byrne, Mullett, WhiteX, Smedts, Cowan, C. Smith, M. Brown, Drummond, DVR, Hibberd, Leonardis, Rice and O'Riordan as all being decent chances of getting some early games and filling those roles, those who've followed closely can probably throw a few more names up.

Smedts is out for a while. Just had shoulder surgery. I think he is all but done tbh.

    Re: Back Rookies

The one name I will throw in here is Josh Wagner, a rookie listed Melbourne player who was taken from the NEAFL with pick 2 in the rookie draft.

A competent mature aged half back with good foot skills and a decent build. Endurance is probably the issue at the moment. I'd say he's not a round 1 lock by any means but worth keeping an eye on in the NAB.

Another guy I will throw in is Marcus Adams, pick 35 in the draft by the bulldogs :-

    http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/ne...5-marcus-adams
    Marcus Adams

    Height: 193cm

    Weight: 95kg

    Club: West Perth

Bio: Big bodied key defender, with good game sense and aggressive streak. Had a super-impressive year in the WAFL, where he showed an ability to play on all types of forwards. Exceptional speed and power for his size, shows great courage in the air and is a long kick. High scope for improvement in AFL environment and should flourish under Luke Beveridge's tutelage.

Snapshot: Ready made, highly competitive key defender with elite speed and power.

No idea how well he has gone so far in preseason but he has back/fwd classification so thinking of pairing with Brown from Ess to help cover 2 lines if he impresses & gets games early in the season.

    Re: Back Rookies

There's quite a few mature agers. They just haven't come up much yet. The Irish Carlton pair of Byrne and Sheehan are looking quite good. Byrne in particular seems like he is best 22.
Nathan Broad at Richmond, though early reports haven't been amazing on him. Sam Collins at Freo has been impressive from what I've read. He's a fairly defensive KPD though, so may be one if we need numbers.
Haven't really heard anything on him but Marcus Adams from the Dogs is another. Tom Ruggles at Geelong. Josh Wagner at Melb.
From the Buddy article on the Swans intraclub:
Of the younger brigade, injury-riddled rookie Nic Newman looked polished off half-back, while the Swans' first pick in last year's NAB AFL draft at No.3, Callum Mills, showed class and composure under pressure.
Obviously it's a tough task to break into the Sydney side, but if Newman did he'd be a . Big scoring potential.

+Brown, Hartley and maybe Francis. Easily enough to start 2 rookies. Currently thinking start 3.

This article on the afl site well worth a read:
    http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-01-1...afl-preseasons
reviews each first year player's pre-season. Will incorporate it into the pre-season google sheets file.

Been training very well in preseason, no hiccups thus far. Is doing a higher workload than the other draftees (Adcock aside) which is to be expected given his mature age and body. I think he's a decent option if he plays with the way we set up down back, with backs playing in front and looking to attack the ball more than man a player.

    Re: Back Rookies

Not sure what he priced at, guessing it would be low enough to be rookie priced but one to keep an eye on is Daniel Howe from Hawthorn.
Very good chance to break into the side and take one the spots open from retiring/traded players. ie Suckling.
Scored 69/73 and 98/88 in his 2 non sub games.

Every training report has him as one of the best and impressing everyone.

    Priced at 265k.

That's the range where one of two thing has to happen for me to really want him...

    1. No rookie options - Obvious here, if he's the cheapest guy playing then you're forced into it

    2. Blows preseason away - If he shows the ability to average in the 90+ range then obviously at that price he becomes worthwhile.

Otherwise it's a super awkward price! One to watch for sure though.

    Re: Back Rookies

Might be worth monitoring Clay Cameron from Gold Coast.

Has apparently been switched to a third-tall forward role and is a chance to get some games.

A bit pricier at 170k in SC, but is 140k in DT. 60/75 in NAB1.
