Every team plays each other once. They play each team in their conference a second time. it removes some of the bias regarding who you get home and away. (Conference games mean much more, they are the true 8 point games). It's a way to keep 22 games and have a 'fair' fixture. It'll still be unfair because the AFL will stack the Northern conference, but that's no different to COLA, Academies, etc.
