Is it just high scoring Grand Finals that we're talking about here?

When we open it up to Finals in general you get some great high scoring finals. Hawthorn's Preliminary Finals vs Collingwood, Adelaide, Geelong & Port were all pretty high scoring and close from memory.

Adelaide vs the Dogs was also the best contest of week 1 of the finals, at least in the entertainment stakes.

That had as much to do with how pathetic the other games were as much as anything. It was a fun game though.

I was away when this game was played. Heard about how good it was and remotely recorded it on to my IQ with the Foxtel Guide app. Still have to watch it.

Seriously, make time to watch it, was an amazing game of footy.
I wish I knew someone who recorded it, I saw it live, but would love to relive it again.

If in doubt, assume it was.

In fairness, I don't understand most of what the AFL does these days.
It pretty much revolves around fellating Luke Hodge and everyone associated with him these days.

    Re: 2016 AFL Fixture

How do you guys think finals series would go over just individual games? Not entirely sure if I like it or not as I think putting it all out on the field on the day to either win or lose is what makes the finals so very exciting. At the same time, you get to see both teams play home/away and how they bounce back after a loss/if they can win again and more talk on the match ups, tactics used etc.

Say for example there's 17 rounds of footy so each team players each other once. Finals then go into the best of 3 so you still keep the TV stations happy by giving them all the games they paid for. Obviously it falls short since only half the matches would be played (no bottom 10 teams playing from that point onwards) - potentially a round robin (with the 9 matches allocated for the above, enough games where each bottom 10 team could vs each other once) could be done for the bottom 10 where a random draft pick is up for grabs for the winner (say pick 6 for example so the 5 crappiest teams at least have their pick locked away) of it so all those teams have something to play for and it gives those supporters something to hope for.

Out there idea which I don't hate on first thought although I'm not sure how practical it might be and if it would be better/worse turning each round of the finals from 1 game to best of 3 - Means you get your team playing both home and away followed by the team on top getting the second home game if it comes down to game 3. Finals would probably have to chance so it would be like 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5 with no second chances making it a 3 round finals series instead of 4 - Think that would mean the season would end 1 week earlier than usual which is also a tick in the players books.

Thoughts? Probably far too many changes when I don't necessarily believe any are needed. Just think it has some advantages of everyone vsing each team just once, everyone in the finals will both get at least one home and away match (so everyone gets a chance to attend if they can't travel) and it potentially gives the bottom teams something to play for after round 17 when they'd otherwise be in tank mode.

    Re: 2016 AFL Fixture

I don't mind series but it doesn't work for AFL for mine because it drags out too long. It only works on the sports where you can play 3 games in 5 days or 5 in 7 type situations.

I just don't think we need the change everyone keeps chasing, in fact I think that's the problem, instead of establishing history and tradition we keep changing things every year and I think that's the problem right now. It's like everyone at AFL HQ is completely ADD, really I guess the problem is there are that many committees whose jobs rely on making changes so they make changes.

God no, that's exactly the mentality which is wrong with American sports (apart from the NFL obviously).

I've been saying 17 round fixture for a while, will bring a lot more fairness to the VFL fixture.

I'd rather see my team play 5 more times.

    Re: 2016 AFL Fixture

The above would see your team playing roughly the same about of games, just means everyone doesn't randomly vs 6 teams twice which can make the fixture a little unfair (although everyone should play each other twice really so you play both home & away).

Do agree it works better for sports where games can be played every 2-3 days rather then waiting a week each time.

17 rounds just doesn't work. Then you have half the teams who only have 8 home games.

I think playing games based on ladder position for the 5 double ups is alright tbh.

Easily adjusted in fairness by who travels where, as a good majority are in VIC. Work it on a rotating roster over seasons.
