Re: 2015 AFL Trade and FA thread

I think Richmond should go hard for Treloar if they can't get him as he is fixed on Collingwood then Bennell is the next best option. They could even add Stevie J to their list which would be handy in their forward half/midfield.

Richmond have been good this season but their leaders didn't stand up in a big game, they got so close and they need to add quality to the list to hopefully go further.

Oops, you're right, there's a thread in General AFL, I'll combine these posts in there.

Edit: Both threads merged into Trading, Drafts and Free Agency subforum as it seems a natural place for the thread.

    Re: 2015 Trades/Free Agency

Article by Emma Quayle (one of the best) yesterday :-

    http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-new...14-gjmfs1.html

Harley Bennell has gone home to Perth to begin contemplating his next move, with half a dozen clubs having expressed some genuine interest in the up-for-trade onballer.

West Coast and Fremantle are among the clubs to have asked questions about the Gold Coast player, who was told last week he would be sent to a new club. While Melbourne and St Kilda have decided the midfielder is not for them, the Suns and Bennell's management hope he will have several offers to consider.

Bennell was sacked by the Suns after being given a public nuisance notice outside a nightclub. Some close to him believe he will have his best opportunity to make things work if traded outside his state.

Meanwhile, the Western Bulldogs are yet to approach forward Jarrad Grant with a contract offer for next year. And Greater Western Sydney half-forward Jed Lamb is keen on moving to a third club, in search of greater opportunity.

Grant, out of contract and an unrestricted free agent, is considered a touch and go prospect to be at the club next year. The 26-year-old played 19 games in the Dogs' forward line this season, his best effort since 2011.

Grant signed his last contract at the end of 2013, knocking back interest from the Brisbane Lions after the Bulldogs added an extra season to their one-year offer.

He is one of few uncontracted players on the club's list, the Bulldogs having proactively signed a number of their talented youngsters to early extensions.

Lamb has one year to run at the Giants, who lured him across from Sydney at the end of 2013 on a lucrative three-year deal alongside ruckman Shane Mumford. He has struggled to break into the side in the last two years and this year managed just two senior games.

Losing Lamb, a former first round draft pick, would enable the Giants to clear some cap room.

The Giants are set to lose Adam Treloar – the onballer has asked for a trade to Collingwood – but are insisting they will not trade forward Cam McCarthy home to Perth. McCarthy, who won the Giants' rising star award at their best and fairest function, is contracted for another two years.

    Re: 2015 Trades/Free Agency

Bennell is going to be very interesting. Gold Coast have really shot themselves in the foot by basically putting him on the clearance rack, which should just make him more tempting to any club who are confident in their off field systems and really even then the off field stuff is pretty overblown (Drugs, whoopee, who isn't doing that?), a scuffle with a bouncer (again that says as much about the bouncers) and the fight in Mandurah (anyone who knows Mandurah just has to giggle at that, you can get in a fight for smoking the wrong cigarettes out that way!). Basically Bennell is an idiot is all any of those things say, you can't fix stupid but you can sure manage it when it comes with that kind of talent.

Lamb is an interesting one, not sure where he fits, just hasn't got it done at AFL level at all but he really does have some skills, would think somewhere like Brisbane or Carlton probably makes the most sense where they don't really have his type.

    Re: 2015 Trades/Free Agency

The Bennell story I find kind of strange. Like on one side I understand the idea of moving away from the known in an attempt to straighten himself out. On the other, if he was serious about that, he wouldn't even be in the situation he's currently in (he's had plenty of warnings this year/plenty of time to sort himself out if he wanted to).

Do hope the Crows are at least looking into him as he's a highly talented player if he can sort out his off-field issues.

Just on Bennell, his manager & Mum are keen for him to join a club outside of WA as they are very concerned about the influence his circle of friends will have have on him if living in WA which I completely understand.

His brothers & sisters however want him to stay in WA where they can support him/look after him.

Going to be very interesting to see how it all pans out.

I find the Grant one interesting. He's pretty much ridden the potential tag for his whole career, without much actual return on that potential. Yet, he kept getting a game and being persisted with. Until this year, where he actually started to make good on that potential. He's had a good year. And now they aren't going to offer him another contract. I don't get it.
This post was more than likely SC based.
If in doubt, assume it was.

West Coast have no interest in bad boy Harley Bennell in next month’s trade period after he was given his marching orders by Gold Coast.

Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett yesterday dismissed any move to recruit Bennell despite media speculation West Coast were an option.

Bennell’s management has made it known to some clubs that he does not want his client to move home to Western Australia, which may make it tough, but not impossible, for Fremantle to lure the highly-gifted midfielder/forward.

The Dockers, Richmond and North Melbourne have emerged as the frontrunners for him.

“Everyone should be considering Harley, he’s a good player,” Nisbett said. “But right now, our priority is not in addressing recruiting for the future.”

Bennell, who is in Western Australia on holidays contemplating the next phase of his football life, was sacked by the Suns after running out of chances following a series of off-field alcohol-related incidents in recent years.

Hawthorn yesterday also rejected speculation that they had an interest in Bennell, despite the likelihood of the Hawks easing some salary-cap pressure by losing veterans Brian Lake and David Hale, and free agent Matthew Suckling at the end of the season. Lake is unlikely to have his contract renewed after three years with Hawthorn, while Hale is understood to be considering retirement.

Suckling is under strong consideration by Brisbane, but much will depend on their draft compensation for losing fellow free agent Matthew Leuenberger. Suckling may have to be traded to avoid a watering down of the Leuenberger compensation selection.

West Australian Leuenberger is being sought by Sydney, Essendon and Fremantle.

Gold Coast’s interest in Melbourne’s Jeremy Howe has waned, particularly at his asking price of $500,000 a season, which is believed to have come down significantly from his initial financial demands.

“It’s not the money … you’ve just got to be where you’re happy,” his manager Ben Niall told SEN yesterday.

The out-of-contract high flyer has attracted “genuine interest” from other clubs, according to his agent.

Brisbane, who will trade for contracted Carlton utility Tom Bell, is also considering the merits of recruiting big forward Levi Casboult, who is also under contract with the Blues.

Carlton said yesterday they were taking a “watch and wait” approach to free agent Matthew Kreuzer after Collingwood dropped off as a potential home for the ruckman, who underwent a medical for the Magpies last Friday.

Kreuzer could still stay with the Blues despite his management shopping him around.

The Eagles, who will trade with the Swans for Lewis Jetta, who has rejected a contract-extension offer to stay in Sydney because he wants to return home, have also rejected misplaced speculation that contracted Brisbane midfielder Jack Redden is headed their way.

Redden, who has requested a trade but not yet nominated his club of choice, is more likely to go home to South Australia where he has the interest of Adelaide, who will lose free agent Patrick Dangerfield to Geelong.

St Kilda have firmed to be in the box seat to recruit out-of-contract Essendon key-position player Jake Carlisle after North Melbourne’s interest cooled.

Kangaroos coach Brad Scott declared North’s keenness to add Carlisle to their list before he walked out on the Bombers. But their pursuit of him is understood to have diminished dramatically following a recent meeting between Carlisle and North officials.
    http://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/wes...ype=registered

Does anyone else think the journo has misinterpreted what Nisbett said?

“Everyone should be considering Harley, he’s a good player,” Nisbett said. “But right now, our priority is not in addressing recruiting for the future.”
I read that as Nisbett acknowledging that Bennell is a quality player, not our priority right now as we are in the middle of a finals campaign.

I love how he writes the entire article as facts that will and wont happen. Eagles will trade for Jetta (who you could apply that quote to equally fwiw), Dangerfield will sign with the Cats.

It's basically someone who spend 15 minutes gathering rumours off Big Footy and then presented them as fact.

I half expect more of the "wont happen" to happen than the will with the way he has written it!
