Jack is a pretty big loss as well given Sydney are already playing without Parker.

    Haha!

I guess technically I am tipping WCE premiers but a lot comes down to this week and they are underdogs (marginally.)

Hope we get at least 3 ripper contests from the 4.

    Re: AFL Finals 2015

Really interesting 1st week of finals.

    My tips :-

    Freo by 31
    Crows by 24
    North by 10

Freo - no Jack & Parker really hurts the swans, dockers players being fresh & rested makes me think they will win comfortably.

Dogs trip up to the heat of Brissy last week I think will effect them - confidence affected also losing to such a poor team. A young side that has been up for a while, showing signs of fatigue after a long season - finals footy goes up a notch, question marks if they are ready for that. With no decent ruck I can see Jacobs dominating/ crows are the best clearance team in the comp which is very important in finals.

North - competitive last week for most of the game with half their side missing, great record v tigers.

Left out the WCE v hawks game as obviously bias. Realistically, need NN to dominate & our mids to take advantage of this. Hawks mids are very good at either sharking the taps of the opposition ruck/ getting 3rd man up/ or forcing another stoppage - no clear breakaway by the opposition. Game will be won & lost in the engine room as usual - the team that generates more inside 50's & more scoring opportunities will win given the scoring ability of these 2 forward lines. Hawks go in favourites quite rightly but expect a terrific contest.

Never argue with a fool. They'll drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Jack is massive, easily our best two way runner and one of the few with actual speed. We've actually been a bit better without Parker, I actually think having to bring in a bit more speed has helped in that regard, the Mitchell, Kennedy, McVeigh and Parker group is pretty slow unfortunately, it's been the big problem trying to fit Mitchell in for a long time.

The big one will be if we can get Bird and McGlynn (especially McGlynn) back, they've been playing reserves for a couple of weeks but we are a completely different team with McGlynn, he brings and sets the maniacal pressure standard which isn't there without him. He's good for a goal or two a game as well and is a legitimately dangerous forward. Bird is another guy who runs very hard both ways, not a lot of toe but a phenomenal work rate and he uses it really well, another guy who tends to kick important goals and is also one of our best tacklers. We've really missed both of them all year, the difference between them and a Rohan or Brandon Jack is massive, they bring just the same pressure but can find the pill 20+ times as well and are both very contested in nature.

That said, as much as we've missed them, unfortunately they are basically a poor mans KJack and Parker coming in to replace both instead of just being massive additions. I'd hope they both come in this week.

Hopefully we will line up something like this...

    FB - Smith Grundy Rampe
HB - Shaw Richards Laidler (not a fan of Laidler but he will be there...)
    C - Jetta Kennedy Hanners
    HF - McGlynn Franklin Rohan
    FF - Reid Tippett Goodes
    R - Pyke McVeigh Mitchell
Int - Cunningham Bird Heeney Jones

The last spot hopefully comes down to Jones, BJack and Lloyd (though Towers was good on the weekend at least). I like Jones because he is hard as nails but BJack probably is a better sub candidate to be fair.

Still shaking my head the AFL forcing the Dogs to play at the MCG. They've played four matches there in the past 3 seasons ffs, some home ground that is! The Crows have played more games than them there in that time

    Re: AFL Finals 2015

Who was the last minor premier that people gave so little chance to, before the finals series? I find it particularly interesting seeing as most think they'll win first week, giving them a home prelim. You have to go back to 2005 to find the last minor premier who didn't make the GF.

I think Swans' (poor) form has been over-stated a little. They are still a quality team with a great midfield (that is weaker than usual), 2 of the best forwards in the game and a defence that holds up.
The Hawks haven't played a winning final away from the MCG in years. They haven't played an away final since 2010, which they lost as a favourite at Subi. They come up against a team that has a massive home field advantage (travel and umpiring).
WC lack finals experience for a number of their list.
Freo don't score enough and have a dysfunctional forward line. If our season was reversed and we'd won the last 8 games like we started (but without rest) I think the concensus woulds be that it's Freo's best ever shot. I think the rest for Freo's list (especially Pav, McPharlin and Sandi) will be vitally important.

If Hawks make the GF they should start favourite, but until then I think it is much more open than people are giving it credit for.

    Re: AFL Finals 2015

@Nothing - I would have Freo favourites as of right now. I think way too much has been made of the scoring ability of WCE/Haw v Freo's attack. Freo play a different brand of footy to those 2 teams but it has been proven to stack up well in big games for a few years now (last year's finals series excepted). The resting of players last week along with Walters/Balla & Fyfe (if 100% fit) to come back in fresh leaves them in a great position for the finals series. On the swans, not just the 2 key mids out but Buddy's back is a real concern, still looks to be troubled by it so a long flight over here isn't going to do him any favours. As one of the swans match winners, him not being 100% with the 2 mids out makes me doubt how far they can go.

The Haw v WCE game is massive for the chances of the other teams in the finals. If the hawks win, get the week off & then a home prelim at the MCG, they would be the clear team to beat with their record over the last couple of years - think they have won 9 of their last 10 finals. IF WCE do win this weekend, the hawks would then have to play a home semi before flying back west again for a prelim if Freo do beat Sydney which for an ageing team is a huge ask even for a team as good as the hawks.

You clearly haven't watched us, on paper we're probably the best team in the league and we have played like we believe paper is all that matters. We are soft, slow and terrible under any kind of pressure and have been for about 10 weeks now at least. Sydney will have to completely reverse form to pose any threat.

I think the reason people are writing Fremantle off is because of how the draw has fallen. They should beat Sydney comfortably but if they somehow don't then they will face Richmond or North, both sides that have had their number in recent matches and then they will either play a neutral Subi or the MCG to even get in. If they win then they don't get a real home game or they play the Hawks, again they'd be underdogs in both games. Whether it's fair or not, that's why they're getting little respect I think.

Yes but that's not the reality. They haven't been able to score and they're limping in badly. Fyfe, Pavlich, Walters and Ballantyne are four of their 7 most important players and are all limping in to this final (at least they're limping and not on crutches like the Swans guys...), they haven't looked like scoring in 2 months, they've been smashed by every decent side since round 10 except for the 2nd Richmond game which if we're honest Richmond lost more than Freo won it! I actually think Freo can do it but like Sydney, they're much better on paper than they are on exposed form, they showed they can do it over the first 10 rounds but they need to get back to playing at that level to do it. The positive for Freo is getting Sydney in round 1, as doubtful as Freo's form has been, it's been markedly better than Sydney's and a win means another week of rest which is massive for them.

If Hawks make the GF they should start favourite, but until then I think it is much more open than people are giving it credit for.
Hawks vs Eagles is such a massive game. Hawks deserve to be favourites in every match but the Eagles absolutely can beat them and it change the whole dynamic if they do (because both Sydney and Freo can also beat them at home). Hawks are still the side to beat though, just how it works.

It is one of those years though were I think there are 6 sides that could actually win the flag, (I don't think North or Dogs can do it personally). Tigers have shown they can beat anyone (or lose...) and Adelaide on paper are pretty equal with the other sides but I wouldn't be tipping them still. Top 4 has form all over the place but last year Sydney were basically the Hawks/Eagles and the Hawks were more Fremantle than anyone else and we all saw how that one ended. Heck 2012 was similar, Sydney were basically Sydney/Freo in that scenario and Hawks were playing themselves/Eagles. And yes... I'm being an optimist here, it's all I've got because reality says absolutely no for Sydney!

    Re: AFL Finals 2015

Freo should be able to bully the Swans in the middle, after another look I reckon they win by a little bit more.
I think Swans been travelling pretty poorly for the whole year (well compared to how they are rated) their forward line on paper looks good but it performs below league average, given Freo should dominate the midfield that makes it even more difficult for Sydney.

Hawthorn vs WCE looks like the grand final preview, but if Hawks lose its going to make things bloody tough for them come GF day if they make it, that is a heap of travel for an old team.

If Hawthorn win this week I have Fremantle making the Grand Final.

I have them winning comfortably this week. In fact I'll take Fremantle against any team in the top 8 that isn't Hawthorn.

I think they are better equipped to win at the MCG than West Coast and I don't see Sydney making the Grand Final this year because I can't see them winning away against any of the top 3.

Hawks win this week leads to what will most likely be a Preliminary Final Derby. Kind of want Hawks to win just for that reason.

    Re: AFL Finals 2015

I gave Hawks a decent advantage this week thinking Eagles didn't have a lot of finals experience, but on a further check probably 16 players for Eagles this week have played at least 5 games in finals, so I think they should be alright in that regard. teams do struggle when they're fresh to finals but Eagles don't really fit that category imo.

Dogs on the other hand with just 5 players, Crows will have 11.
