    AFL Broadcast Rights 2017-2022

    • Channel Seven will broadcast matches in HD free-to-air from the start of the new deal in 2017. Kerry Stokes said Channel Seven is looking into broadcasting in HD before the new deal kicks in.

    • The AFL retains full control of the fixture, including whether the Grand Final is scheduled as a day, twilight or night match.

    • The AFL fixture will remain at 22 rounds, with nine games each weekend.

    • Outside of Thursday night matches, public holiday and bye/split rounds, the competition will feature:

    - One Friday night match
    - Two Saturday afternoon matches
    - One Saturday twilight match
    - Two Saturday night matches
    - Two Sunday afternoon games
    - One Sunday twilight game

    • Foxtel will continue to broadcast every game, except the AFL Grand Final, live on Pay TV.

    • Foxtel holds the right to sub-licence one game per round each weekend in the Saturday 3.20pm AEST timeslot to a free-to-air provider, if it chooses.

    • Telstra will once again hold the rights for hand-held devices, AFL.com.au and the club digital network. Telstra will broadcast every match on mobile devices.

    Re: AFL Broadcast Rights 2017-2022

So far I've only listened to the press conference they played on SEN on the drive home, but it was said (as said above) "Telstra will once again hold the rights for hand-held devices, AFL.com.au and the club digital network" Does this mean for the next 7 years we still won't have the ability to stream every match online as can be done with international sports, ala AFL Pass?

The way I interpreted what they said is it will basically remain exactly how it is on the streaming front in which case I'm going to be pretty pissed but I'll contain my rage a little as I might be wrong.

Think the only thing different on the digital front is that Fox Footy will be on Foxtel Go, so Foxtel customers can watch on a PC.

Haven't heard as yet, but have everything crossed that 7 don't still have the teams exclusively at 6.25.

So absolutely nothing has changed basically except 7 might eventually buy some used 2010 cameras to start recording with?

Was hoping we'd get Thursday or Monday (was hoping both) or even Sunday night instead of the stupid Saturday duplications that make no sense as a spectator (perhaps because the Swans so often are the undercard to the actual blockbuster in those two time slots).

Basically this renewal is a FU to anyone without Foxtel by letting 7 keep it despite their pathetic efforts to date.

Maybe that 12 teams would play on Thursday or something?

That weekend fixture is perfect, they never put two good games on at the same time that clash. Thursday/Monday football is horrid imo.

Thursday night football will play a pivotal role in the next AFL broadcast deal with the league looking to fixture 12 Thursday night free-to-air games from 2017, throwing a strategic challenge to the football calendar, which it could even bring forward to next season.

From a Caro article last week so I guess they changed their minds on that.
