http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/af...3ce5baf7543afdMELBOURNE’S plans to draft a co-pilot for Jesse Hogan will become clearer on Wednesday with key forward Sam Weideman to undergo AFL-supervised fitness testing.
The Demons are closing in on the imposing goalkicker and grandson of Collingwood legend Murray Weideman, who has not played since a second bout of ankle surgery in May.
The Demons have used a clutch of recent prized picks on midfielders but have voiced their intentions to find Hogan a complementing forward and have already traded their first pick next year.
Melbourne believes landing a second key forward is critical to its hopes of tying Hogan to a long-term contract.
Taking Weideman would leave a suite of gun midfielders for Essendon, which holds picks four and five.
The Bombers have loved inside-outside midfield jet Darcy Parish all year and will also weigh up Charlie Curnow, Wayne Milera and, in what would be a draft shock, bolter Clayton Oliver.
It also emerged last night the Bombers have not ruled out using their Jake Carlisle pick — No. 5 — on South Australian Ryan Burton, who has not played in 16 months.
Clubs believe picks 3-5 hold the key to Tuesday’s national draft, with Carlton set to crown Jacob Weitering No. 1 and Brisbane Lions poised to draft spearhead Josh Schache at No.2.
Powerful inside midfielder Oliver was overlooked for Vic Country but rattled home to win the TAC Cup league medal and blitz draft combine after a pair of VFL games for Richmond.
The Ollie Wines-type is a bash-and-crash on-baller who kicks goals.
With a thick body, long kick and good speed he or Parish could become the centrepiece of the Dons’ next midfield.
Burton is a 191cm marking forward in the Jack Gunston mould but has said he wants to develop into a Nat Fyfe-like midfielder.
Burton was on track to be an early pick before suffering a horrific leg injury which mangled his left knee.
If Weideman can run close to level 13 in the beep test today clubs believe it would quell fears he has “red zone” endurance.
Weideman was in Eastern Ranges’ top-five runners as a 16-year-old before suffering an iron deficiency and ankle problems.
His sample of form small but strong and the Dons would also like Weideman to help Joe Daniher,
Essendon has a dearth of key forwards after Carlisle’s departure and Cale Hooker’s mooted return to defence.
Gold Coast has pick six but is not believed to be interested in Weideman.
It is believed the Tigers’ dream result is drafting Oliver at No. 12 but if the Dons baulk he is more likely to land at Melbourne (No. 7) or Carlton (8 or 11).
The Blues will target a tall forward with one of their four top-20 picks with underdeveloped 200cm goalkicker Harry McKay a chance at No.8.
List boss Stephen Silvagni was in Adelaide on Friday, believed to be meeting goalkicker Burton.
The Suns have long liked classy half-forward Milera, who had minor heart surgery this year.
They are hoping high-flyer Callum Ah Chee is available at their second pick, No. 16, where they would almost certainly snap up the West Australian.
But with four clubs holding multiple picks in the top 13 uncertainty continues to cloud the order in what is proving a tactical draft.
Collingwood is keen on booming left-footer Brayden Fiorini but enters the draft at No. 27.
Clubs with picks just ahead in the 20s including North Melbourne, Essendon and the Western Bulldogs could pounce.
West Perth key defender Marcus Adams, 22, could be the first mature-age prospect taken with interest from Fremantle and the Dogs.
Hawthorn — which has picks 15 and 18 — has shown interest in Bendigo utility Tom Cole and has been linked to AFL-ready key defender Kieran Collins.
Smokey Sam Murray is also a chance to find an AFL home. He played senior football for Wodonga this year after being cut from the Bushrangers’ pre-season and if overlooked he is expected to play TAC Cup next year.
Article from the HUN seems to back up most of Anderson and Quayle's recent comments with quite a few other tidbits.
Interesting comments on Burton.
Also really hope the Hawks don't pick Tom Cole. Really liked what I saw from his 2 academy games against VFL opposition and from all reports performed well for Geelong VFL later in the year. Would very much like him with Essendon's 24/25.
Also it'll be tough to do with the academy players bidding and Essendon's consecutive picks, but worth a bunch of us putting in entries to the draft top 10 competition again this year. Expecting it to be a fairly unique draft so a good chance only 1 or 2 people (if any) correctly select the order, so should favour syndicates. $10,000 prize, so shared between a lot of people it's still a good amount.

Comp closes at 5pm on draft night though, so certainly don't put in an entry yet.
That c4 carlton dude I'm often quoting on here mentioned last week that Carlton were interested in Burton and worried about Adelaide looking at him with either 9/13. Suggested Carlton were looking at going with him with either 8/11.
Really tough player to predict where he'll go given when he last played it sounds like he was a top 5 player but with how serious the knee injury is, could see him drop quite a bit. Guess it'll come down to the medical reports but it's something you think he'd carry/struggle with for however long his AFL career lasts - think he avoided doing any running on the floorboards in the draft camp which in itself is a little bit of a worry.
We haven't been put off by injury in the past if their medicals checkout afterwards.
We took Lever last year for instance and the rewards can be massive if due diligence is done. Joel Selwood is another example.
Massive difference between an acl and Burton's knee though. From what I've read, he's got no cartlidge left in it and after 16 odd months now he's still not fully healed.
His surgeon, former Crow, Liptak said it was like a jigsaw puzzle which makes it sound quite bad.
Maybe he has a relatively injury free career but I'd guess he's a bigger injury risk then even your average injured player you draft.
Will be interesting to see exactly how the club's view it, someone like Carlton might be more inclined due to how many early picks they've got.
It's sounding more and more likely that Francis will make it to our pick![]()

Just having a listen to the recent road to the draft podcast, Cal Twomey saying that he thinks Oliver will be gone by GC's pick 6 (presumably to Essendon) which is interesting.
*Unrelated to this draft post*
As you know, lots of places at this time of year do a look back at past drafts etc and one was on the 2007 draft about Danger etc. Anyway, I decided to hit up BF to look at their old phantom draft from that year as back then some of the U-18 posters were actually pretty decent, although Wiseby was always the best for an in-depth description of players. So I searched for the 2007 phantom draft and only found one match which looked to be from earlier in the year. At the very end of that thread was a post from 2008 linking to the real 2007 phantom draft thread there that freaked me out. Why?.............because it was my post![]()
From Emma's facebook Q&A today:
Da ZookWho do u think dees will pick at no3 and ess at 4 and 5 emma?
Emma QuayleI think they both want Oliver so Dees might have to grab him at 3. But Curnow/Weideman/Milera/Francis/Parish are in the mix for both clubs too.
From Brett Anderson's Twitter:
Brett Anderson @BrettAndersonIF 49m49 minutes ago
@ChaserJay One thing I am sure of though, is that Parish isn't in mix at 3. Could be there at 7 still.
Brett Anderson @BrettAndersonIF 33m33 minutes ago
@shetski@ChaserJay Yep. Carlton have done extras on Curnow in past few days. That suggests he could get to 8... so who knows!! #raffle
on Parish:

@keithyp23@findlay_47@ChaserJay In this draft nothings certain. If i had to bet right now, its more likely than unlikely that Dons pass.
Interesting developments! Certainly wasn't expecting Parish to be around for that long.
@pvcyclone - did Emma make any comments regarding Ryan Clarke on where she thinks he will go in the in the draft?
Most think he is in the 15-30 range, would love him at WCE but doubt he lasts till our first pick.
SC is FFC's number 1 fantasy game
Nothing on Clarke as far as I could see. She didn't answer that many questions though.
Reckon anything could happen at that stage of the draft Bunga. Very good chance that one or two slide far more than expected with wildly differing opinions on most players outside the top group.
So as it stands think we are sitting something like:
1 CAR Weitering 2 BRL Schache 3 SYD Mills 4 MEL Curnow/Weideman/Oliver 5 ESS Curnow/Weideman/Francis 6 ESS Parish/Oliver/Milera 7 GCS Parish/Oliver/Milera 8 MEL Curnow/Weideman/Francis 9 CAR McKay/Burton/Milera/Francis 10 GWS Hopper/Kennedy
Not yet added in the extra layer of complexity if there are earlier bids on the GWS boys, so I'm just going to leave that alone until Emma tells me otherwise.
So as always, when in doubt follow what Emma has said which would lead to something like the following at a best guess:
1 JW 2 JS 3 CM 4 CO 5 CC/SW 6 DP/TM 7 DP/TM 8 CC/SW 9 HM 10 JH/MK
Obviously with Essendon's 2 picks could be in any order. Or they could screw the top 10 right up and go two smalls or two talls.
Really just need to lock in the Dees first pick to start making some good guesses at the top 10 though. Hopefully that happens in the next couple of days.
Weideman had his fitness test today. 3.21sec over 20m and 12.4 beep are both certainly at the bottom end of potential draftees. Medical results will probably be more important but these fitness results won't alleviate any concerns.
