    http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-12-2...al-rule-change
'THIRD MAN up' has been banned in a radical change to the laws of the game in 2017.

In a surprise move, the AFL notified clubs on Wednesday that next season only nominated ruckmen will be able to compete at a contest for a throw-in or ball-up.

Other players will therefore no longer be permitted to contest a ruck contest as 'third man up'.
    Also

A stricter interpretation of deliberate rushed behinds will also be introduced and the interpretation of where a player draws high contact will be simplified.

    Re: Umpiring Interpretation Changes

A stricter interpretation of the deliberate rushed behinds won't be a fan favourite I imagine.

Be interested to see the interpretation change for players trying to draw high contract, could potentially be good (coming from someone whose team hasn't masted the ability to draw frees out of it like others have).

Completely agree, this just adds even further value to picking Sandi if fit for round 1.

Do 3rd man up even beat Sandilands?

    Re: Umpiring Interpretation Changes

Sandi, Gawn and Goldy the big winners, imo. Geelong, Hawthorn and the Dogs are the 3 sides that really spring to mind as suffering from it.

Personally I'm not a fan of the change, I think the easy and best solution was to allow players to engage and shield 3rd men up rather than it being a free kick because I still think the tactic has its merit.

LOVE the rushed behind rule but I was also a bit of an outsider in loving the out of bounds tightening last year. Some of the rushed behinds they allowed last year were just pathetic and I'm a fan of keeping the ball in play and adding the pressure to defenders to execute their skills.

The tackle one will hopefully improve things, if I understand right they'll basically be told to call play on as long as it's a technically correct tackle which is a win-win in my book where the ball holder has created the high contact. Does make Shuey and Selwood in particular a bit less appealing as starting picks as the two most relevant proponents of it.

    Re: Umpiring Interpretation Changes

The last change which wasn't mentioned originally is a slight change to the 10m protected area. Umpires will now enforce it when the player in possession has gone back from the mark, i.e. once they're in position to kick the ball.

    Re: Umpiring Interpretation Changes

I would also have liked players being allowed to block the third man up. Means you can keep the tactic but also allow opposition to combat it. Should advantage both ruckmen (Goldy, Sandi, Gawn etc) and possibly inside mids as the ball won't be cleared far as often.

Hitouts dont tell the whole story. 3rd man up can also just create an inneffective ruck contest, will be a huge win for big rucks.

    Re: Umpiring Interpretation Changes

Agree that inside mids might benefit from the 3rd man up disappearing. It should keep the ball locked in tight more often, which probably means more stoppages again and a fresh round of rule changes in 2018 to reduce the number of stoppages #AFLlogic

    Re: Umpiring Interpretation Changes

I'm surprised with the 3rd man up change. It proved to be an effective way of getting the ball away from the contest (the third man usually belted the ball away more effectively than one of the ruckman tangling with each other). This change will just lead to more congestion with more repeat ball ups.

Does this just apply to on field ball ups or boundary throw ins as well? If the latter, I'll be interested to see how it gets policed when the ball comes in short or otherwise off the mark. Does every other play have to stand there and let the ball hit the deck while the two ruckman wrestle with each other??

More bewildering behaviour from the AFL. *sigh*

From a #SuperCoach perspective, Fyfe had the best HTA% from 3rd man up HO since 2013 (41.4%). Bont next best with 41.2% and Parker 40.3%.
5 points per HTA in SC. 41.2% rate means Bont is down ~130 pts in season 2016 or 5 ppg. That's actually a very considerable hit.

Have to say I'm a fan of the decision, agree they need to be protecting the role of the big man and the ruckman.

    Re: Umpiring Interpretation Changes

I agree the 3rd man up needed changing, however i am probably more of a fan of the 3rd man able to be blocked, i feel this would nullify 90% of the 3rd man up's, but it would still happen on the odd occasion making it a more effective and more exciting change-up.
Bont/Wines definitely the 2 relevant players to take a hit to scoring, guess this makes sure i don't jump on Wines next year haha.

Will also be eagerly watching the 'drawing high contact' decisions, it's going to be hard to call consistently and the players will just adapt to the new way they will be calling it anyway imo, and find a new way to draw free's. But we'll see.
