Yeah would imagine it would give a bigger initial buzz and certainly makes more money. If it happened to have a numbing effect it would be perfect but I have no idea if it does.

This kind of undoes the steak story. Big night on the town on the cards I reckon.

Or they were incredibly stupid and wanted to get shredded.

I don't think the steak story was believed by the players it's just an explore all options scenario.

    Re: Random AFL Thoughts/Statements

    ASADA circus
    Jack Richards

What a fizzle to the so called "Darkest Day in sports". Essendon was slammed by the media clowns left right and center in a fact finding mission that was out to get someone without having a shred of actual evidence. Now that the saga is over, no one actually knows what has gone on, not even McDevitt.

Winding back the clock, we see that Essendon was guilty until proven innocent. ASADA looked like the clear winners with Andruska's notes and evidence from Ziggy's reports. Where could Essendon go? They were slammed with articles saying that Essendon should get the sack and ASADA investigators trying to get them to plead guilty without a single blood test coming back positive. Facts were that the AOD drug that was originally the issue was not on the prohibited list. Then it became the Thymo-Beta 4 that was the issue.

2 years this went on for. Players reputations were slammed. Coaches were slammed and Essendon was dragged through the mud with the "Bringing the game into disrepute" catch all clause, which resulted in them being booted out of a final, stripped of draft picks and Hird being banished for 12 months. The Club has stood strong and with some alliances in former players such as Tim Watson and Media Identities such as Sam Newman, They gave their supporters some confidence.

Now the case is over, it took 3 panel of judges at AFL house to give an honest verdict based on facts. Essendon players were not guilty due to lack of evidence to support that they took the drug in question.ASADA had no real concrete evidence. They had conversations with Alvi and Charters, but they didn't sign the documents as official statements and refused to go to the court. Charters himself was not impressed with how ASADA wanted to manipulate what he was going to say. Andruska's statements were shoddy at best with "I cannot recall" statements in court when Essendon cross examined her. But the biggest arrow was no actual documents of the drugs administered and no positive blood samples.

Yes that is not say that the club couldn't have done more to make sure they didn't end up down this path. So in that way, the club is still guilty. ASADA will also come under fire. It took 2 years to get this. A whole year was spent gathering their evidence for show cause notices, yet they lost a case based on lack of evidence. Ben McDevitt who looked sour, surely will lose his job especially when he came out to say "We actually do not know what was taken." in front of media the day after the findings. Now they are standing firm with their idea of lodging an appeal, which some reporters are saying will most likely not happen. WADA are still there and no doubt they will press for an appeal as many Individual sport stars in other sporting codes have watched closely and are scratching their heads on this.

In reality, the players have done their time. Journos have beaten them like a punching bag without a chance for them to fight back. Whether they sue for defamation is one thing, for now they just want to do what they love and that is to play footy.

I think it was well summed up on 360 last night. There was no doubt that the vile of brown liquid is the most important thing in the whole investigation, and without Dank coming to the fact we are never going to find out what was in there.

I'm glad it's over, and I'm glad for the players that they have been "cleared". Hoping this is the end.

    Re: Random AFL Thoughts/Statements

Footy needs a Revamp and could these be possible answers?
    Jack Richards

The AFL needs to look outside the cost of the "Food" to improve their attendances at weekly games and improve supporter satisfaction. In light of the new prices being announced to make hopefully improve game attendances, the AFL continue to ignore what clubs, players and actual supporters are highlighting as bigger blights on the game. Constant and inconsistently implemented rules, cost of general and premium seating and clubs not getting enough money from game day tickets. Could looking at American sports be a possible answer to all of the above issues.

Before the witch hunt and naysayers vent, here me out. Before we had Etihad Stadium and the MCG, clubs played their games at their home ground. Hawks had Waverley Park and Essendon had Windy Hill. Nowadays clubs are locked into ridiculous deals with big stadiums that take a fair chunk of ticket sales. James Brayshaw recently slammed the deal that North has at Etihad where for all the games they played at the stadium in 2011, they only got $611,000. In American sports, Clubs own the stadiums that are built and also have a major say in what prices are charged therefore getting more money from the ticket sales for their home games. Only this season clubs are just getting an input into what prices will be set for home games, how much they get from the those sale prices is yet to be seen.

Now comes the prices of tickets. As highlighted earlier, the prices are becoming more out of reach for the average family. The cost of general admission tickets is $25 and for premium seats behind the goals that can go as high as $65. For an average person who cannot afford a membership this could be half a day's wage (assuming they want the more expensive ticket.) For a family, this could be a days working wage to go to a game which is one reason why they would rather watch it on television where they might get a better view of what is happening on the ground and save the money they would have spent going to a game in a non-premium seating.

In smaller boutique stadiums this could be overcome. When clubs had their own stadiums, sure the seating might have been limited, but games were packed. Now add more seating and working out a deal with each club on ticket sales and not only could they work out a better ticketing structure that could be cheaper, but families could be more enticed to go.

Rule changes are arguably the biggest gripe of the average supporter. Since the year 2000 over 30 rules have been implemented to make the game 'better' in the eyes of the AFL. Some are minor tweaks such as the size of the center square, but some have changed the fabric of the game that our parents (and us) grew up with. The dreaded bump rule of 2011 is a much hated rule by most fans due to different interpretation from umpire to umpire and has divided some fans with arguments about how the game is going "soft". Whether the game has changed in a good way or not, the bottom line is that supporters, players and coaches cannot keep up. When asked in media conferences, coaches say they are still trying to get their heads around while older supporters vent and get disenchanted.

Shouldn't the AFL and their fans association ask their supporters and clubs what they would like to see and actually implement it. There are bigger issues that need to be address like those mentioned earlier, other than discounting soggy pies and stale chips.

Yeah get rid of it straight away pls.

Outside of fantasy, it's just terrible for the young players to actually work their way into the side when they're made to wear that stupid green vest.
