    Re: Random AFL Thoughts/Statements

Reading a couple more articles on the MRP and it seems there are more changes than mentioned above.

    From http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-11-2...demerit-points , http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-new...25-11tuss.html and http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/af...-1227134815744 we have

    • Carryover points and loading will be eliminated and penalties will now be in terms of weeks, rather than points.
    • There is no more discount for good record, however if a player has been suspended for 2 or more matches (or more than 2...articles differ) in the past 24 months, then an extra week is applied to their charge. Players can still use their good record as part of an overall argument at the tribunal though.
    • 1 week discount for early pleas.
    • Negligent and Reckless have been removed from the intent section. They have been replaced with careless, so now there is careless and intentional as options. Impact and point of contact remain the same.
    • Removal of double penalties for Grand Final day reports. Serious incidents will still attract a greater penalty in Grand Finals but not low level incidents.
    • All offences will attract the same penalty (i.e. striking and rough conduct now the same) with differentiation to be done on the grounds of grading.
    • MRP will not be able to give out base level suspensions of more than 3 weeks. Anything graded higher is sent to the tribunal.
    • Only suspended players will be ineligible for Brownlow

    Main points

    1. Offences that would have incurred 80 or 125 pts will now incur fines. The fine for first offence will be $1500 ($1000 with early plea) and points would only come in for a third offence of that level.

    2. Head clashes as a result of bumping will have more discretion on the part of the MRP.
    Factors include
    - Whether the degree of force applied by the person bumping was excessive for the situation
    - Whether the player being bumped was actively involved in the passage of play
    - The distance the player applying the bump has run to make contact
    - Whether the player being bumped is in a position to protect himself
    - Whether the player bumping jumps or leaves the ground to bump
    - Any alternatives available to the player instead of applying a bump

Point 1 will reduce the number of players ineligible for the Brownlow by close to half.
Point 2 will make it more difficult to work out what a player should get for an incident but might allow the MRP to be more lenient, especially for accidental head clashes.

Just on Point 2 above, it appears as though those are the criteria for accidental head clashes as a result of bumps, not for bumps directly to the head. Accidental head clashes are now no longer automatically a report but MRP can use factors in Point 2 to determine if a report should be laid.

Boomer has a sign of relief! Only 1 suspension in the past 24 months and all of his loading and carry over points are gone!

Wells was only 3 points away from a suspension as well so thats handy.

Boomer was suspended for multiple matches last year though so if he gets done again he gets an extra week tacked on.

Or he could actually learn from his mistakes.

Bit stiff that if you get suspended in the NAB Cup it counts towards the H&A season and not the NAB games. You'd think something like 2 NAB Games = 1 H&A game would be fair or even just making NAB games count.

    Re: Random AFL Thoughts/Statements

After the MCG lowered some of their food and drink prices for this year (http://www.mcg.org.au/Media/Media%20.../MCG_Food.aspx) Etihad are trying to get in on the family friendly stuff and also try and find a way to get more people in on Sundays which has been a really bad drawing day in recent years.

    http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-03-2...gets-its-kicks

April and May - kick to kick after Sunday games
Children getting free popcorn/fairy floss at halftime (good luck in that queue).

Price comparison between MCG and Etihad Stadium:
    Hot chips:
    MCG - $4, Etihad Stadium - $4
    Pie:
    MCG - $4, Etihad Stadium - $4.80 ($3 on Sunday)
    Soft drink:
    MCG - $4, Etihad Stadium - $5.40
    Bottled water:
MCG - $3, Etihad Stadium - $5 (Etihad to provide 10 water fountains for free usage, unsure if they're just mouth only or if you can get a bottle in there)
Clearly crowds have been down in recent years with FOX showing all games live and more competition for attention as higher speed internet allows for more entertainment options. Since there seems to be no choice with regards to timeslots as TV dominates that, the grounds have had to give this a go. Anyone more likely to attend now?

Can't say food would ever be a draw card for me to go to the footy.

Same as for me. Always wore a backpack to the footy with a sandwich, bottle of water and maybe something to snack on, so I don't think I've ever bought something at the footy bar maybe the occasional post game hot jam doughnut . The lines at the breaks and the number of people around who bought food do clearly show that it's a very common thing to do though and so must be a draw for at least a decent proportion of people.

    Re: Random AFL Thoughts/Statements

Like I don't doubt that cheaper food might have more people buying food at the footy but it's not going to bring people into the gates in the first place if that's what they're hoping it'll do.

Apart from cheaper tickets, I don't think that much will as there's always going to be the same amount of good/bad teams, I guess if some of the lesser supported clubs were playing well it would boost given some other clubs will always draw a crowd regardless.

I think it will bring people in, whether justified or not, people will think they are getting more value. AFL done well this year with all their fan interactions, expecting improvement in crowds this year.

    Re: Random AFL Thoughts/Statements

Probably makes it more likely that families will go if they can get a decent priced meal as well as the footy, wouldn't impact my decision in the slightest. Simple fact is that footy is better to watch on TV 9 times out of 10 (and 10 out of 10 if Subi is your option!).

AFL venues are uncomfortable, the facilities are poor and it's a difficult sport to watch live and follow due to the size of the field and speed of the action and the fact you need to pay attention the entire time.

Going to be difficult to get more fans to the game considering all those factors and that doesn't even factor in the complete tossbags that make up the majority of fans that go to games (this is seemingly an Australian thing unfortunately).
