Quite a few of us would have James Cousins on our bench.
He hurt his shoulder on the weekend playing for Box Hill and will have surgery on it, most likely out for the rest of the season.

Hasn't made enough cash to doing anything with. Perfect loophole donut for games where Hawks play late enough in the round, which is basically every week other than this and round 19.

    http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-08-0...ing-with-youth

HAWTHORN will consider sticking with youth in the final three rounds and warehousing its returning premiership heroes after a 29-point loss against Richmond that all but ended the club's finals charge.

The Hawks have been waiting on the return of defenders Grant Birchall (knee), James Frawley (toe) and Josh Gibson (groin) as well as star forward Cyril Rioli (knee), but time is running out for the group.

"We're not expecting too many back to be fair," the coach said on Sunday night.

"Birchall, (Ben) Stratton, Rioli, Frawley, Gibson, they're probably all unlikely for the next week or two … but we're going to run out of time with three games left.

"You've got to decide whether it's worthwhile bringing them back via Box Hill (and) Box Hill are top of the ladder and going really well, so it's probably going to destabilise them.

"It might be best to just not worry about bringing them back and keep going with the younger fellas and see where that takes us over the next three weeks."

New knee surgery slows veteran Hawk

    http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-01-1...defenders-2018

HAWTHORN defender Grant Birchall's horror injury run has continued, with the star Hawk requiring a pre-Christmas arthroscope on his troublesome right knee.

Birchall hopes to be back running by the end of January, but already faces a race to be ready for round one after an abbreviated pre-season to date.
Rule him out imo. Be lucky to string 5-6 games together and probably won't get to Round 1 anyway.

His knee has never been the same since he did that injury down in Tassie a few years ago.
Agree red line through his name.

    Re: Random Hawthorn Thread

Unfortunately agree, since that knee when he was absolutely flying he's not been close to the same player even when he plays. Can't see the 95 average from him or the durability to justify anything less.

Sicily is the Hawks gamble I'm looking at. JOM is probably the only other one I'm really even looking at (Titch obviously in the premiums).

McEvoy is probably the only other one to consider, his strengths are best accentuated in a poorer team as evidenced by his best seasons at the Saints being as they slipped and last year at the Hawks. He tackles well, which involves losing around the contest and he's a very good intercept marker, which involves not having the ball, both things that get helped in a weaker side. They also don't really have a logical backup so hopefully he would get big minutes.

Thoughts on Titch this season in both formats?

Lock and load or too expensive?

Pretty much single handedly destroyed any chance I had last season, so I'm leaning towards to the lock and load.

No reason he can't match last year's averages, but I haven't really considered him in Supercoach yet.

I haven't made my AFLF/DT teams, but I imagine he would be a good captain choice so might be required!

Perhaps lock and load DT, flexible for SC

I wonder if he averaged worse with JOM in the side? There is talk JOM is fit and looking good this pre-season.

For me RDT yes, SC no, mainly cause I don't see a lot of upside or value in starting him.
RDT you want him for the captain option, SC there are plenty of other options.

    Re: Random Hawthorn Thread

Pretty much agree with Elvs here.

DT he's the best captain option and thus a strong starting pick. SC he's got limited upside, genuine downside and multiple better captaincy options. His bye is his strength though if I were to pick him that would be a big reason.

On the Hawks in general... they had an open intra-club and the highlights from the AFL article for mine were:

O'Meara playing the whole match basically (had a rest each quarter which is normal I'd expect) with no strapping and unhindered. If he has a perfect preseason he firms as a really decent option.

Sicily played down back and was intercepting everything, taking kick ins and had a primary rebounding role. Basically SC defender porn, he's firming as a really strong option. Averaged 91.4 over the last 10 which included a mare of 25 against Carlton where he was tagged and then moved forward in the 3rd and another mare against the Cats where he rolled an ankle early in the 3rd. 5 scores over 100 and showed some serious ceiling as well. He's basically replaced Gibson who was a premium while insisting on spoiling, if Sicily can be similarly effective and mark instead, that's a good 20 point difference and the high premium levels that become possible.

Gunston was back forward after his unproductive stints down back last year, he's a borderline premium historically which given the plethora of options and the Hawks general expected trajectory keeps him in my unlikely pile but he's worth watching.

Mitchell and Roughy were both full participants as well.

Yeah there's a few good options at Hawthorn this year, particularly down back.
David Mirra yes been impressing and should get games this year, not sure on R1, but he is low rookie price.
The other one I have a watch on is Ryan Burton, who's listed as back but a good chance to push up into a more mid field role.

    Re: Random Hawthorn Thread

    http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-02-1...awks-intraclub

THE EXTENT of James Sicily's outstanding performance in Hawthorn's intraclub clash at Waverley Park on Friday night is laid bare in the numbers.

The Hawks released individual player statistics on Monday, with Sicily finishing the match with 27 disposals and 12 marks down back.

They are in line with the 23-year-old's respective averages of 24.1 possessions and 9.1 marks in his 10-game reinvention as an intercepting defender last year.

Sicily's penetrating kicking was another feature as he duelled for best-on-ground honours with Jaeger O'Meara, who amassed 33 touches, seven marks, six clearances and a goal.

Most promisingly, O'Meara played without any strapping on his troublesome knees, which have restricted him to six AFL games in the past three years.

Jack Gunston (23 disposals, nine inside 50s), Tom Mitchell and Ricky Henderson (23 each), James Cousins (21) and Luke Breust (20 and a game-high three goals) were other major ball-winners.

Ex-Port Adelaide recruit Jarman Impey was also lively with 18 touches and three shots on goal.

But one player who may have snuck under the radar is fourth-year midfielder Dallas Willsmore, who gathered 29 possessions and used his 191cm frame to take six marks.

Sicily is looming very large as an option, JOM tempting again
SC is FFC's number 1 fantasy game
