    Random Hawthorn Thread

HAWTHORN has delisted defender Jordan Kelly, and rookies Ben Ross and Derick Wanganeen, ahead of the 2014 NAB AFL Draft.

Ross managed four games for the Hawks this year after being upgraded from the rookie list for the injured Jed Anderson.

Before joining the Hawks at the end of the 2012 season – in which he won the J.J. Liston Trophy for the best player in the VFL with Werribee – Ross played 14 games in four years for North Melbourne from 2008-11.

Kelly wasn't able to break into the Hawks' side in his three seasons at the club, after being drafted with pick No. 38 in 2011.

Wanganeen was re-drafted as a rookie last year after spending the maximum three seasons on the club's rookie list. He was upgraded ahead of the Hawks' season opener and made his debut in round one against the Brisbane Lions. It proved to be his only AFL game.

HAWTHORN president Andrew Newbold has resigned, effective immediately and has handed the reins at the club to Richard Garvey.

The timing is a major surprise given it is less than two months since the Hawks' annual general meeting, at which Newbold gave every indication that he would complete the final two years of his term.

It comes as negotiations continue for a new deal for four-time premiership coach Alastair Clarkson and as due diligence continues ahead of the purchase of a 28-hectare site in Dingley, which is slated to become the club's new home base.

Bizarre timing, much more to this story me thinks.

Interesting, not a great start for the Hawks this year.

When something like this happens I tend to think it is a health issue rather than some form of screw up.

I hope all is well with him and his family.

Some news from the intra-club game yesterday that Birchall played in the midfield & was outstanding - something to watch for in the NAB cup.

Do you know anymore about this being a permanent move @Elvs1 ?

Saw that, no haven't heard anything about it being a permanent move.
Been no mention of training with the Mids or anything prior to the game, but very interesting move it does come about.

Main things from preseason are Sicily most likely to take Roughy's spot.
O'Rouke and Howe have really stood out and have looked very impressive.

    Re: Random Hawthorn Thread

If Birchall is playing midfield it's got to be a great sign for that knee of his being in as good a shape as possible which means even if he isn't playing midfield that he is a very decent option to start with anyway at basically 10 points underpriced on his best in both formats. From memory he had no preseason last year and was severely limited in 2014.

He's one of those guys who is a pretty safe bet to at least average 80/90 but very capable of 90/100.

Howe and Sicily interest me. I'll watch them closely in the NAB. Birchall in a mid/wing role would also be tempting.

    Re: Random Hawthorn Thread

I agree with Wogi about Birchall, I don't give a crap about him playing midfield - believe it when I see it. But it does suggest he is fit and firing, meaning that even as a permanent backline player he should be back around his best
    TEX WALKER. that is all.

Birchall always tempts me. I'm more afraid about his durability these days.

Any news on WhiteX out of the weekend? He seems to be the forgotten man at Hawthorn. B/F status and $198k in SC has to be considered.

I have seen his name mentioned a few times, always positive stuff.
Problem is there is so many similar guys now competing for 1-2 spots.
Even if he was picked round 1, I doubt I would pick him as there is too much js risk, after one poor game he could easily be replaced by someone else.
