Re: 2014 AFL Draft/Trade Thread
Interesting to see Matt Panos back in there. Was a lead up full-forward in his junior days and failed to get a chance at AFL level as he wasn't able to do anything else. Has gone to Norwood and from all reports has been playing as a midfielder.

Correct.
Collingwood fans may also remember him from their VFL side in 2011-12.
Nearly drafted in 2011 but busted his ACL. Understandably it has taken him a little time to find his feet again

Half random statement, half draft related, but is Dillon Viojo-Rainbow the greatest name of ALL time or wat?

Re: 2014 AFL Draft/Trade Thread
Has been a bit of talk this year about the NSW/QLD academies, where by the Swans, Giants, Suns and Lions effectively get first dibs on players from their home states.
This is largely due to the Swans' leading academy player this year Isaac Heeney who the Swans are likely to pick with their first rounder. Heeney is rated a top 5 pick by many.
There have also been some suggestions that the academy/FS bidding system may be overhauled.
CLUBS will pay a fairer price for young talent if the AFL adopts a revised father-son and Academy bidding system presented to AFL CEOs.
Under the proposal, each draft pick would be assigned value according to a statistical formula that will allocate points to each draft selection.
These values would then be used to determine the fair price a club should pay if it wants to acquire a father-son or Academy selection.
Under the current system a club only has to select the nominated player with its next available pick if an opposition club bids for him.
The proposed system would also include a discount or credit to ensure clubs investing in father-son and academy programs retained enough incentive to continue to invest in developing that talent.
If accepted it would mean that a club might have to use more than just its first-round pick if acquiring highly sought-after talent.
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-08-0...idding-changes
The debate seems likely to get a whole lot larger next season if no changes are made to the current system.
Callum Mills, who is a Swans Academy member, eligible for next season's draft, played his 2nd NEAFL game on the weekend for the Swans reserves as a 17 year old. Now we know the NEAFL isn't exactly the same standard as the SANFL/WAFL/VFL. His stats for the game: 21 kicks, 19 handballs, 40 disposals, 7 marks, 6 tackles.
There are some suggestions that at this early stage, Mills would be the #1 pick in an open market. A lot can happen in 12 months but f*** me those are impressive numbers. Seems absolutely ludicrous that the Swans should get two top 5 picks in two years for the price of effectively two end of first round picks.
I understand the principle of the Academies, to allow more talent from QLD/NSW access to the elite pathways, and to in general get more guys from those regions drafted, but really, does Sydney in any way deserve another leg up? Again, I reckon you can make a much stronger argument that GWS and GC should continue to have first access to the Academy players, because after all they don't have the opportunity to sign Father Son options like many other clubs. But Sydney and the Lions now have both the FS and the Academy players. Just imagine if Joe Daniher had in fact chosen to go to Sydney (where he was eligible to go). That would've meant that in the last 3 years and the next 2, they would've picked up as many as 4 guys (Tom Mitchell, Daniher, Heeney & Mills) rated as top 5-10 draft picks for end of first round picks. Seems beyond farcical.

Re: 2014 AFL Draft/Trade Thread
I think the academy itself has to stay. I just think that they need to remove AFL club's participation in it.
This isn't so much a Sydney thing (even if they are the barometer for public interest here) it is the ridiculous advantage it can provide 4 teams in the comp.
If Adelaide or Port got first dibs on the best SA talent they could have had all of Trengove, Hurn, Gibbs, Griffen & Cooney running around for SA based clubs and would be absolute powerhouses.
Same for the Perth clubs if they got first dibs on the WA talent.
The market needs to develop, but the AFL should take on that burden and remove the inherent inequality there.

Re: 2014 AFL Draft/Trade Thread
Why is it the Father Son and Academy picks are being put into the same basket? I'd like to see the Father Son system stay the exact same myself, maybe because Adelaide is yet to have a father son pick yet and might in the next few years so it would be shit to have to pay more.

Re: 2014 AFL Draft/Trade Thread
Father son picks got a massive overhaul after the Geelong era where they got Ablett, Ablett, Hawkins and others from FS picks in the mid 30s/40s.
That's why we have bidding.
The academy is very different, 4 clubs are getting access to the best talent in their state and only have to give up minimal costing to get these players. The opportunities to keep get players fro the academy is much more consistent than finding a draftable kid from the handful of players who played 100+ games for your club. That is why they are separate imo. Because the chance that this becomes another huge advantage for a select few clubs really needs to be altered before it creates an imbalance in the league.

Re: 2014 AFL Draft/Trade Thread
I assume one of those Ablett's should be Scarlett?
If the overhaul then forced these clubs to bid on them like the father/son picks then I've got no issue.
But with the mention on father/son picks it seems they want to clamp down further on this as well as change how players from the academy are drafted.
Edit: Completely forgot about Nathan

2014 AFL Draft/Trade Thread
Yeah I agree. FS should certainly be different.
I would've thought that the ability of the Qld/NSW clubs to have these academy players train with them and play with their reserves' sides would be advantage enough. Come draft time they would already have a far greater idea of the worth of the players than other clubs.
I believe for example FS prospects are only allowed to train with their aligned club in their draft year. Prior to that they are prohibited from being too involved with them, yet the academy players are given a leg up by training in the elite environment earlier. I have no issue with that at all, but it's unnecessary to then allow priority access from the clubs .
The top end talent doesn't need to be tied to the Qld/Nsw clubs to be drafted. And if other players in the academies are good enough to be drafted then there's a fair chance that they remain in their home states anyway, much like how Adelaide clubs are more likely to draft SA players and WA clubs the same with WA players to remove the go home factor.
