    2014 AFL rising star

Shaping up as one of the most difficult awards to predict this year, has been such an even spread across the board.

The Nominees and their season to date

Round Player Club Games Stats Stats
    1 Luke Dunstan St.Kilda 14 18.5d 3.9m, 3.7t
    2 Dylan Buckley Carlton 8 13.4d 3.6m, 2.8t
    3 Josh Kelly GWS 12 16.8d 2m, 2.8t
    4 Luke McDonald North Melbourne 15 17.5d 3.9m, 2.8t
    5 Matt Crouch Adelaide 7 17d 3.4m, 3.6t
    6 James Aish Brisbane 15 17.1d 4.5m, 3.8t
    7 Tom Langdon Collingwood 15 16.9d 5.8m, 2.6t
    8 Jarman Impey Port Adelaide 15 11.2 2.7m, 2.7t
    9 Lewis Taylor Brisbane 16 15.9d 4m, 9 goals
    10 Kade Kolodjashnij Gold Coast 14 18.4d 4.9m, 1.6t
    11 Zach Merrett Essendon 13 14.5d 3.3m, 3.6t
    12 Joe Daniher Essendon 16 11.3d 5.7m, 19 goals
    13 Marcus Bontempelli WB 10 16d 2.8m, 3.7t
    14 Jack Billings St.Kilda 13 14.5d 4.8m, 12 goals
    15 Harry Cunningham Sydney 16 12.8d 3.8m, 11 goals
    16 Troy Menzel Carlton 14 9.2d 3.5m, 22 goals
    17 Nathan Hrovat WB 7 16.1d 2.9m, 3.7t

    Current Betting (sportsbet)

    $2.50 Bontempelli
    $5 Aish
    $7 Kolodjashnij
    $8 Langdon
    $10 Kelly, Dunstan
    $12 Daniher, McDonald, Merrett
    $15 Billings
    $21 Menzel, Patton (not nom)
    $26 Cunningham
    $34 Taylor, Crouch
    $41 Impey, Kersten (not nom)
$51 Hrovat, Hunter (not nom), Stringer (not nom), Martin (not nom)
    $81 Buckley, Grundy (not nom)

Given how even the output of the players have been, the betting seems to be too lopsided with Bontempelli way too short.

Who do people see as being the most deserving winner this year and given that there is always a suggestion of profile being favoured, who do people see actually winning it?

I haven't really seen Collingwood play for about a month now but before that, I would have had Langdon right up there, thought he's done very well for his first season and was fantastic against Adelaide whenever we last vsed them.

Lewis Taylor has been putting up his hand in the latter part of the season.

    Re: 2014 AFL rising star

My top 5 would be Kolo, Langdon, Aish, Daniher and Dunstan at the moment but Taylor, Impey, Bonto and McDonald are all right on the heels.

I think I'd probably lean towards Aish if I had to vote because he has probably had 2 of the 3 best games of anyone this season (Dunstan the other) but for mine Aish has been very inconsistent, between the sub and just being a skinny kid on a bad team his best is excellent but has had many games where he may as well have not played.

Tough to pick though, I'm hoping Dunstan or McDonald gets up for financial reasons (much prefer Dunstan!) but think they're both drifting, McDonald is racking up games but is just so invisible as a player and his stats so hollow that it's hard to see him polling well, he just gets his 15-20 very low impact cheap touches and that's pretty much every game so far... Dunstan is just fading way too hard and his team has been so dreadful that I can see the voters turning towards guys in teams that are doing better.

Good crop of players but no one is having a good rookie season, potential to be a special group though, imo.

I still reckon Langdon is a big show. Had 2 or 3 massive games where he was as good as any medium defender in the league. Plenty of other solid games. Only knock is he's slowed down in the latter part of the season.

I'd say Aish for consistency, not sure he will get 5 votes from many though, going to be an awfully close count which is good

Geez, back to back GOTY/MOTY noms are doing Bont no harm.

Kolo, Langdon, Aish my frontrunners but it's so tight.

Kolo was my pick but if that hammy is any more than a twinge then he may have cost himself a chance given how close the voting will be. Was having a ripper on the weekend too when it happened.

At this point I probably tier it Aish> Langdon > KK >Bonts >Others

KK obviously won't win now and Langdon has slowed massively since the head knock.

Aish has been that consistent guy and can see him getting rewarded for that.

The overall class of this group looks nothing compared to last years though.

I'd personally say that the class actually looks to have close to as much potential it just isn't nearly as AFL ready as last years class. Guys like Kelly, Kolo, Bontempelli, Billings, Aish, Menzel and Daniher have all flashed the potential to be special players but a lot had interrupted preseasons or are just very skinny right now so their first year impact hasn't been as great as last years more physically ready group.

When you consider that 4 of the top 8 players in the draft (including Hogan and Martin) haven't even been nominated that's not a bad sign for the class overall.

I should have clarified that I meant in terms of the football they put out in their nomination years. But I think they may have this year's class covered in the long run as well.

Any of last year's top 3 (O'Meara, Crouch & Wines) would have ran a clean sweep this year IMO.

On top of that there were Whitfield, Viney, Brad Hill, Vlaustin, Macrae, Mitchell & Mayes.

It's a pretty stellar year and a lot of guys kicked on with it this year.

But they were definitely more AFL ready, especially the top 3.

Great to see Zach Merrett get some recognition. Didn't get a single vote in the rising star.
