New Years Test - Aus v SL

Tomorrow is the final test of the Australian summer, and if it wasnt for Hussey's retirement and Tony Greig's tribute there would barely be any anticipation from me. Australia have released their XI and have made a surprising change, opting to take 4 quicks to an SCG pitch which is uncharacteristically green.

    Ed Cowan
    David Warner
    Phil Hughes
    Michael Clarke (capt)
    Michael Hussey
    Matthew Wade
    Mitchell Johnson
    Mitchell Starc
    Peter Siddle
    Nathan Lyon
    Jackson Bird
    Glenn Maxwell (12th man)

Good to see Clarke put it upon himself to keep his amazing form going at 4, but I think Australia missed the boat by not seeing what Maxwell could do before the Indian and Ashes tours, where the spinners will be of great importance. To me it looks like the selectors didnt have the balls to make a decision between Bird and Starc.

Don't understand why we didn't pick maxwell, and it showed when we bowled we had to much quicks.

pity Warner couldnt convert his innings into a 100+ score. HIm and Hughes were going along nicely.

Good to see Hughes getting some runs and cementing his spot in the team. With Hussey going on top of Ponting those guys need to be making runs all the time.

I have never like seeing 4 quicks ever, except for the most bouncy and quick WACA pitches. Overstaffed and underemployed.

For the first time in a while I think Australia have found a capable and solid top order with Cowan, Warner and Hughes. Cowan and Warner are starting to build a decent relationship, and excluding their horrendous run out today they've had some decent partnerships the last few innings, while Hughes is doing everything right this summer to suggest he's cast aside his demons. Clarke today has shown his stunning form at 5 can be transferred to batting 4 as well. Wade isnt the logical solution for 6 though, he's got to go back to 7. Khawaja seems to be next in line so will likely take Hussey's spot and bat at 5, and if Watson can be fit then 6 should be his to cultivate a proper all rounder role in the team. Otherwise I'd like them to use Maxwell at 6, at least for the Indian tour where they'll need a 2nd spinner. Or if they're after a quick then Henriques has been the best performer in Shield this year, with 13 wickets and 314 runs so far.

The problem with all-rounders is that they really need to be world class at either batting or bowling. I'm not sure Maxwell or Henriques are elite at either and Watson's body just won't allow him to do what he would like.

Edit: Actually, Henriques figures look enticing this year. Be interested in seeing him play a decent amount of one-dayers batting 4-6 and bowling first drop to see what he's got.

Yeah seen guys like McDonald and Smith come in and be OK at both but not really good enough at one to really deserve a spot in the side over a specialist batsmen/bowler. Want to see an allrounder who would deserve their spot as a specialist batsmen or bowler, not that players like that grow on trees.

Still no hope for Dave Hussey, even with his brother out of the frame? Shield form wasn't great but FC record is still very good. Quick fix solution I guess, but he does have experience at international level in other disciplines, and I don't think we'd mind seeing Hussey come in if it meant we'd have a better chance at winning the Ashes.

I'd like to see Maxwell get a chance in India, a trial run for the ashes campaign if you will. Ideal candidate for number 6 if he can perform.

At his age if he's out of form he isnt getting is back anytime soon, especially at a higher level. Plus the selectors have made a concerted effort to select youth over stop gap replacements, and you want to be rewarding players who have actually had a good Shield season, not pick players simply because they've been involved in the international stage before or have experience or have scored runs in the past but not necessarily recently. To pick DHussey will be a Hilditch selection.

If it was Haddin dropping these easy catches instead of Wade we'd never hear the end of it.
Never argue with a fool. They'll drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

i think Bill Lawry was giving him a pasting for the fact that Clarke took that catch to his left. Saying that should have been a keepers catch.

Healy was a mean as ive basically ever heard him, after Wade dropped the catch of lyons bowling. Saying how is footwork was all wrong and he's not a natural glove-man etc.

His keeping has been quite disappointing tbh, dropping 1-2 catches a test and averaging ~40 with the bat is more detrimental as opposed to not dropping the catches and averaging ~30 like some keepers do imo.

Agreed 100%. Keepers shouldnt be completely relied upon to make runs, leave that for the 6 men above him, but a keeper who drops catches can cost a team a match. For better or for worse though, Gilchrist and Sangakkara have changed the wicketkeepers role from prioritising keeping ability to prioritising batting. Haddin was never dropped for being a bad keeper, he was dropped for not scoring enough runs and having too many brain fades with the bat. Likewise Wade wont be dropped for being an average keeper as long as he keeps scoring runs.
