    Re: Random Sydney Thread

McVeigh the only major blow there, Jack is a solid player but he doesn't do anything that Papley can't do as well while being a much better kick and having more speed to pressure.

Hanners is a genuine blessing, he should never have been recalled after being dropped, he has somehow gotten considerably worse by foot and is even struggling by hand these days, it's actually been a positive that he's forgotten how to find the pill because every time he does is a brutal turnover. Heeney should be back for Hanners, it would be great if Papley could get back for Jack and I'd like Rohan back as well, he doesn't get a lot of ball but his pressure acts are incredible and he's a good target up forward, he's basically a shitty ginger version of what Rioli brought where his best work is without the pill.

Fox should stay in and get the chance in McVeigh's spot, really hope we don't bring Marsh back, again...

Would also love if we'd drop Cunningham but he's probably busy giving Horse a gobber and Horse is probably too busy getting said gobber to come up with a game plan or some structures for the team because I mean who needs those...

****ing Horse. Genuinely would be happy to miss finals this year if you guarantee we get rid of that colossal ****wit.

It's amazing how a side genuinely bereft of any elite skills can still manage to be in contention for so many seasons. Says a lot about our game.

Gotta say - Wogi rants about Sydney and Horse abuse are highlights of this site for me.

We're really missing Mills to be fair, he's one of our two elite ball users (McVeigh the other) and it allows teams to really lock us into the defensive half that we for some god forsaken reason seem to think is the better end for the ball to live in.

I just don't understand how a coach looks at our list and decides that giving opponents extra defenders is the way to go, that would work, maybe, if we had a stack of elite ball users who could hit targets around those extra defenders but when you're entire game plan is to kick it long and you're entire structure is to give the opponent loose men it is about as stupid as you can get. Like how moronic do you need to be to think those two ideas are congruent.

Throw in the whole structural setup at stoppages to "control the loss" instead of trying to win and attack from them and it blows my mind, the one area we're clearly elite is a contested midfielders and yet we don't use them to attack. Horse genuinely seems to prefer that the ball be locked in our defensive 50 to launch his ****ing slingshot which dont work anymore because teams just leave the loose defenders we give them in the right spots now and cut it off every time rather than embracing the idea of locking it in the forward half and going from there. Buddy is basically the perfect key forward for forward pressure because he genuinely moves and tackles like a small forward, throw in Rohan being similar and Papley, Ronke, Jack, Hayward, Heeney, Parker and Florent all being elite in this area and it just makes too much sense.

It seems to be the hill that Horse wants to die on, I just wish he'd ****ing hurry up and do it.

I honestly don't remember the last time I watched us and wasn't super frustrated because of Horse's abject stupidity.

With Mills and McVeigh out, teams would do well to consider tagging Lloyd and potentially dramatically restrict ball movement out of the Sydney backline. Not just saying this as I don't have him in my team.

CALLUM Mills has taken another significant step towards a permanent move to the midfield with a dominant performance in Sydney's modified scratch match on Friday.

Mills has played predominantly as a defender in his 55-game career so far but has trained as an onballer over summer after recovering from last year's serious foot injury, which saw him play just nine games.

The Swans have been cautious about placing too many expectations on their young star, but his form might force a change to their thinking about making his change of role a gradual one.

He started the game in the centre square with George Hewett as an opponent and won the footy at will in the first half, showing his usual poise and toughness under pressure, and rarely wasted a possession.

The 21-year-old also spent time on co-captain Luke Parker and combined brilliantly with fellow Academy graduate Isaac Heeney, with Mills adding a couple of goals to his ball-winning before half-time.

Just read this, makes Mills very tempting - thoughts @Wogitalia ?

    Re: Random Sydney Thread

I'd love it to happen, he's such a quality player, very few have ever had as much poise as he already does but there is the same old factor that every Swan has going against them... Dickface.

Seriously though, he's probably a better pure SC prospect than Heeney as a midfielder so he's absolutely got to be in the discussion.

Same old story though, so many cooks and a coach who hates the idea of winning the midfield battle and starting in our own half so he actively sabotages our midfield rotations to try and lose them. Guys like Cunningham, Hewett, Hanners (last year), Robinson, et al will continue to get midfield minutes so that Parker, Heeney and Mills can not play full time midfield roles because it's always better to have the guys who struggle to win the football and can't kick delivering to the guys who find it at will and use it well...

I'm not optimistic going into the season to be honest, just about the best outcome I could see is we're terrible and thus fire Horse but if he continues down his path we're a bottom 8 with him at the helm which is never good for SC.

I'll certainly be watching him very closely though, he's also at a super awkward price where it's basically premium or bust.

I still think the biggest issue is going to be that I think there are 5 guys who will average 100+ this year (Whitfield, Laird, Lloyd, Sicily and Simpson) so basically any punt you take has to be able to match that level with decent confidence as it would only take one of the other guys that are perfectly capable of 100+ getting there for Mills to be a 93 and still a failure, if that makes sense.

    Re: Random Sydney Thread

Apparently Mills and Florent were the standouts for Sydney both playing full time midfield roles.

Worth noting that Heeney, Parker and Kennedy all sat out as are playing AFLX. Papley also had heavy midfield minutes.

I do imagine that those 6 should really be our chief midfield group. Hewett will also go through and a few others as well but those guys should be the main guys.

Mills I think has to come into play, his skillset could lend itself to really prolific scoring in the midfield. He'd be by far our best kick and should be the go to man at all times for the midfield group.

Blakey was also really good playing as a deep forward. Charlie Curnow or Mitch McGovern are probably the guys he compares with stylistically who both struggled to have big impacts but would certainly be a role that could allow him to have a boom game that spikes his price. Franklin and Menzel still in doubt for round 1 so that would probably help him get a chance to secure a spot. Certainly one to watch at least.

Florent is the exact type of player that will tempt me all preseason. I'll probably look for a safer option but I really like him as a player. He really benefitted last year for the persistence Horse had with him the year before. Really fast tracked his development nicely.

If Horse wasn’t Mills coach I would be all over him as a breakout defender option ... but that guy defies logic with his decision making.

To be fair, position wise he's not that bad, it's actually one of his stronger areas behind his absolute strongest area which is playing and giving the kids extended runs in the firsts. His problem is structurally he just plays too tall, he has a couple of spuds he keeps picking for some reason and strategically he's obsessed with trying to use his counter attack style, just refuses to adapt to the idea that the opponent will have a harder time scoring if the ball is in your forward 50 and you'll have an easier time, I mean it seems so logical but he disagrees...

Someone has to replace Hanners minutes, who for a guy so obviously broken played a pure midfield role still.

Mills stands out because of his elite ball use which means he should be able to play inside or on a wing, which is, give or take, what Hanners role was.

Parker and Heeney I think will play basically the same role as last year, they'll rot up forward for too long but they'll get midfield minutes still.

Papley, Hewett and Florent are probably battling for the remaining minutes, I'd expect they basically rotate through the forward flanks with each other.

Reminds me of the year David Swallow finally transitioned from defence into the midfield. Class player Mills, you can't really afford not to take a gamble on at his price.
