Re: 2012 Compensation Picks, Draft Order

It will certainly happen with Daniher. It should also happen with Viney but there are only two clubs with picks 1 and 2 who can make it happen so there's a slim chance they might not bid if Melbourne made a discreet deal with them. Most teams know what the team nominating the player is willing to pay for that player and will make that happen.

Also just want to express my happiness that GWS are angry that we are doing so well (thus lessening the value of the compo pick we traded them).

Feels good to pull one back on the expansion clubs (I believe the ledger stands at 2:1 their way now).

absolutely. Melb can pretend all they want, that if the price is too high they won't match the bid - but they are bluffing I reckon.
would be quite damaging to backtrack on their committment to young jack.

I think GC/GWS will bid, and Melb will offer up their pick to grab him.

Agree crow-mo. We were discussing this on the chat tonight. If the bid comes, viney will be taken at 3. Too much invested in him and they've put their commitment to him on paper.

Hawthorn plans to seek an explanation on why they received just draft pick 66 for Young and nothing for Tom Murphy (Gold Coast).
The AFL's compensation formula is based on the player's age and his new contract offer, but Evans said clubs needed more information to understand how compensation was awarded.

"On the surface of it, pick 66 as a combination for Clinton Young and Tom Murphy doesnít seem just, and certainly doesnít look just when you look at some of the other compensations that were handed out," he said.

"We need a system that's got some equity in it, and we need to be able to understand why some things come out the way they do."

The Hawks are also miffed at receiving no compensation for Tom Murphy.

"It's strange, I actually wasn't aware that there would be no compensation handed out for some players," he said. "I would've assumed there might be some later picks -maybe you didnít want that pick anyway - but I wasn't aware that you could get zero for a player."

Are the Hawks over rating Murphy abit or not? Young was abit surprising thought they should have got a better pick then 66 though.

Re: 2012 Compensation Picks, Draft Order

They were both spot on IMO.

It isn't meant to be equal compensation, this is why Port's compo is quite generous as it's incredibly close to the mark for both players.

Young is right third rounder, the pick 66 is inflated because of the fact that Hawthorn finished second. Had they been WB/Port it would've been around the 50 mark.

Murphy is interesting as he was the guy dropped from the GF squad to make way for their captain. Unlucky maybe but he isn't worth more than a fourth rounder anyway.

FWIW Adelaide are also seeking clarification for no Knights compo.

Okay I didnt think it would really matter where they finished on the ladder, but it does make sense if you think about it. I think it should be the quality of the player that the team should get rewarded more for. They have spent alot of time developing him throughout his career to get him on the park each game, I know he wasn't ball magnet like Goddard has been for the Saints over the years.

The only reason ladder position matters is because the compo picks take place straight after the teams pick so Port have picks 29, 30* & 31* early on and hawthorn have picks 64 & 65*

    *denotes compo pick.

Re: 2012 Compensation Picks, Draft Order

    http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsartic...0/default.aspx

GEELONG chief executive Brian Cook has called on the AFL to scrap compensation picks for clubs that lose players during the Gillette AFL Free Agency Period.

The Cats were not compensated for losing half-forward Shannon Byrnes to Melbourne because they later signed defender Jared Rivers from the Demons.

Although happy with that outcome, Cook believes the idea of awarding compensation selections is flawed.

"I have a principle that we should not necessarily be compensated, as clubs, for losing free agents, but I'm not sure that would be shared by everyone outside," he told AFL.com.au before departing for a trip to Nepal, where he and his son are taking part in a hike to the Mt Everest base camp.

"The rightful compensation for losing a free agent is to get another one back in, really.

"The dollars that you gain by a free agent going off your list is money that should be used to bring someone on. That's the way I'm looking at it."
Surprised that a club CEO has actually stated the obvious about compensation for FA, so hopefully the AFL listens and scraps the nonsense next year.

Re: 2012 Compensation Picks, Draft Order

    Yeah Cook on point.

The big thing is that the main part of the compensation system is where their new contract puts them in comparison to other players.

Young to Collingwood probably wasn't for a lot of money, Murphy is a guy I'd find it hard to believe was getting paid much at all. Thus the compensation makes perfect sense.

Freo apparently opened the cheque book for Pearce, Richmond likewise for Chaplin which is why they got more.

From all reports, Lynch was given pretty much the league average salary, which indicates to me that you will get a 3rd round pick for the league average, so doesn't surprise me that guys like Knights and Murphy would get no compensation as they would be unlikely to be getting paid league average or higher given that Murphy isn't very good and Knights hasn't been for a few years and can't get on the park.

Great news. The way it should be done imo.

Actually more excitement and anticipation in it this way, which ironicly is what they were trying to achieve by going backwards. Obviously hasn't worked week the last couple of years especially as when it gets to the top few you know which obvious few players are left which it has to be, and the same teams have the first few picks.

Yeah agree entirely, it didn't help that they tried it in the compromised drafts where most of the picks were going to the same teams.
