I'm a bit of a noob come the draft process with Father/Son but what happens if we trade Pick 19 in a deal to get Caddy? Or is the bidding process done prior ro any trades being done and hence locking in Daniher @ 19?

Bidding process is done prior to trade week DG.

I love the father son rule as it is, it encourages teams to be as good as they can (since they give up a lower pick that way). This is in direct contrast to the priority picks system that's in place, which actively encourages tanking.

Geelong is going to get less, much less, for losing Ablett than Melbourne get for losing Scully, all because Melbourne are doing their usual tanking practice and we're interested in winning a flag.

It's done prior. The old days we could use pick 80 to get him, but now we have to match any offer made by another club. For instance, if Richmond say they want him with their first round pick, pick 10 (for arguments sake we use the round 14 as final), we would have to use our first round pick to match it. If we had pick 3 in the first round, we would have to use it, but in this case we would use pick 19.

bidding system is completed just before trade week, so we would already have committed out first pick on Joe

    EDIT: too slow

It's your next available pick Jimmy, doesn't necessary have to be in the first rd. For example if you have have pick 3 and Richmond bid pick 14, you will then use your second rd pick for him.

Also in the old days it was a rd 3 pick, so you wouldn't have been able to use pick 80.

Ah ok, thanks @Cat for life and @divvydan for the clarification

Either way Daniher is going to cost us our first pick. He has been said to be a top 3 pick by many people so we are getting a bargin with our later first rounder anyway.

Re: 2012 Compensation Picks, Draft Order

Okay, just looked for clarification with regards to compensation picks and father-son nominations. Compensation picks aren't included in the possible picks to be used on father-son selections. This is really important for Melbourne as for father-son purposes, they have picks 3 and 26. If GWS/GC don't bid picks 1 or 2 for Viney, Melbourne will be able to get him with pick 26, but if they do, Melbourne will have to decide if he's worth Pick 3.

    It's likely that Melbourne will, however they have said, with regards to pick 3;
"We pick the very best player at that pick. Supporters would demand that," Harrington said.

GC/GWS should definitely dominate since there is no chance that Melbourne won't take him.

You tend to signal your intention pretty clearly when you target the kid 2 years out from the draft, move him over to Melbourne and offer his dad a job with the club.

That's true and it's a shame for Melbourne as he's probably only borderline to be worth that in an open draft and could potentially slide to 5-10 range but won't ever be first picked.

I would love all the other AFL clubs to just write off Daniher because they know we are going to get him and noone nominates him before pick 19.

And sign a MOU with him 2 years before he could be drafted, that says we are going to draft him.

If I was Melbourne I would be discussing this with GC/GWS early, maybe offer something like 3rd rounder/player if they don't bid (will need to structure it correctly of course).

If no one nominated their pick before pick 19 then Essendon could grab him with their second rounder.

Since you're already grabbing a bargain someone will nominate just to keep them honest. Hopefully the same happens with Melbourne.
