Changes to Father-Son and Academy Rules

    http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/afl/...627-212vm.html

THE AFL will put a new format in place for father-son bidding this year, to deal with the number of potential first-round picks likely to be nominated and prevent the system from being manipulated.

Rather than offer the nominated players to clubs one by one, in reverse ladder order, the league will instead present them as a group.
For example, should the ladder remain the same, Gold Coast will first be asked if it would like to bid its No. 1 pick on any of the nominated players.

Under the previous format, there would have been potential for the Bombers to bid their first-round pick on, say, Stewart, if he was the first player offered up for bids. Had Collingwood declined to match that bid the Bombers could have taken him, then used their next choice, in the second round, to snare Daniher.

What does this mean for Luke McDonald ? Can another club snare him who is lower on the ladder to North?
Matt Crouch is my boy for 2016 season, can he dominate 2016? time will tell....................

Re: Changes to Father-Son Rule for 2012

No, it's still the same as before with nominated club needing to match with their next pick but the difference is that the bidding will be done pick by pick rather than player by player. For example, GC finishes last this year and gets pick #1. At the father-son meeting, they get asked if they wish to use #1 on someone and let's say they nominate Viney. Melb then have the choice of matching. If Melb does match, the AFL goes back to GC and asks if they wish to nominate someone else with that pick, so GC might then nominate Joe Daniher and then Essendon would need to match with first pick.

    http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/afl-clubs-to-pay-higher-draft-price-for-father-son-academy-stars/story-fni5f22o-1227198697857

CLUBS will be forced to pay what the AFL says is a fairer price for father-son and academy players under proposed radical changes.

Sydney is the first club set to be stung. The Swans have access to Josh Dunkley (son of former star Andrew) and academy gun Callum Mills (rated a possible No. 1 pick) and could need to cash in a multitude of picks — possibly over two seasons — to secure the pair.

Bidding would shift from the start of trade period to live on draft night under the scheme tabled to clubs late on Tuesday.

The new system could be ticked off at the AFL Commission meeting in March, before Round 1.

The AFL created the points system using player salaries from the past 15 years.

Discounts will be applied to ensure the father-son tradition remains and to provide incentive for the four northern clubs to run their talent academies.

The AFL is considering applying a 25 per cent discount to academy players and either a 25 or 15 per cent on father-sons.

It has given clubs until next month to give feedback on the discounts.

There's a lot more in the article about how it would work in cases like Heeney from last year.

They had to do something. Mills is looking like a freak. Absolutely cannot have Swans being gifted Heeney and Mills for near enough to end of first round picks in consecutive years. Turns out they've probably run their academy just a bit too well for their own good.

That said, they still get a jet at the end of it, so it's not like Sydney lose. They just win less.

Re: Changes to Father-Son and Academy Rules

Typical AFL reaction, instead of fixing the problem they just patch it up with stupid systems. The problem is that 4 clubs have academies and 14 do not. Every club should get their own academy in a developing market and just keep the current system so that the inbalance is fixed and the clubs/game actually benefit. Instead we go down the typical AFL path of punishing the clubs that take on the expense of developing the game.

Imagine if Mills and Heeney had happened to be the same year, that's 5 years of draft picks that would be required under this system. That's the kind of stupidly thought out rule change that resulted in the NBA having to create the Stipien rule because it almost completely destroyed a club. 5 years of picks might be worth it if it worked out, doubtful but at least possible, but imagine if you get a Trengove and Scully pairing, that's basically club shattering as a "punishment" for developing talent in non-AFL markets.

I'll be honest, all the AFL rule changes over the past 5 years have me just about done with the sport, the on field product is, imo, noticeably worse, and the arbitrarily applied off field rules are just incoherent trash.

Re: Changes to Father-Son and Academy Rules

In effect what they are doing is acting as a central trade banker, forcing clubs to trade picks to the bank to get back the selection needed to buy their FS pick

So if they need the value of a top 5 pick to grab heeney, this forces the club to trade picks that would be the equivalent value to get the currency needed

It's just like there is no academy or fs system.

heeney costs top 5 in fair value, so it's like having to waive 4 picks over your head to get a buyer who will trade with you. This takes the need to find a buyer in the market out, but it really doesn't reward the club very much.

They may as well just scrap the whole thing and go full deregulated market.
    TEX WALKER. that is all.

Inb4 they just rule that all AFL listed players need to be de-sexed to avoid father-son selection problems in the future.

They had to do something I don't think that this is it, but through COLA & the academy the AFL have set up Sydney to be a powerhouse throughout the reign of the expansion clubs.

Re: Changes to Father-Son and Academy Rules

New father-son and academy bidding system has been finalised by the AFL

    http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-05-2...cademy-players

The AFL has settled on a maximum discount of 20 per cent for academy and father-son players in the first round. After that, the discount will be fixed at 197 points - the discount for pick 18.
The AFL is hopeful of having the bidding as a live element of draft night, but only if the required technology is ready for clubs to use. Statistics company Champion Data is developing an application to simplify the process for clubs and fans on the night.
If that program is not operational, a bidding meeting is still likely to be held much closer to the draft – possibly the week before or even the night before the full draft is staged and after the completion of the trade and free agency periods.

People satisfied/dissatisfy with this change? Haven't really read people's opinions on both sides of the fence to have made up my mind on the matter.

Re: Changes to Father-Son and Academy Rules

Id love the AFL to open up the father son rule to 50 games with the bidding game.

I'd also like them to take the bidding process away for players who played 200 games.
