He's been pretty terrible and probably close to getting dropped over the past few weeks anyway so I don't think it's a huge blow on field. Shitty news though, ACLs just suck and hope for the best for him.

A “wiser” Toby Greene is giving himself every chance of making a lasting contribution to GWS Giants’ 2019 campaign as he battles to make the club’s season-opener against Essendon on March 24.

The 25-year-old forward had ankle surgery in November on the injury he sustained during the club’s semi-final loss to Collingwood at the MCG.

This coming after he played only nine games due to a foot problem, but despite the long spells on the sidelines, he can see light at the end of the tunnel and he’s busting a gut to bring it ever closer.

“It’s a week-by-week thing but it’s going in the right direction,” he told The Daily Telegraph.

“So hopefully in the next four to six weeks I’ll be training with the boys.

“Getting (ankle) surgery was a bit frustrating but it’s all part of it (football).”

And as he puts in the hard yards to give himself the best possible crack at a successful 2019 campaign, Greene admits he is a little smarter for the setbacks.

Senior coach Leon Cameron is also taking the week-by-week approach with Greene, mindful that he wants to give the player the best possible chance of enjoying as lengthy a campaign as possible.

“He’s been running for probably about four weeks now,” Cameron told The Daily Telegraph. “He’s really starting to motor along, tick over and get some yards into his legs.

“We have to be really mindful that we can get Toby ready for 20 games instead of eight to 10 and have interruption. Is it easy? No it isn’t because you always want your quality out there every week.

“But he’s chugging along, he’s on track and the whips’ll be cracking for him in a couple of weeks’ time.”

    Re: Random GWS thread

Given his low average after last year he's a pretty tempting pick but anytime I read that someone is battling to play for the season opener it's a pretty big warning sign.

Yeah, even harder for a guy like him who uses the gut running so much as part of how they score, they're the ones who struggle the most when that's taken away. Could probably still get him cheap as an early upgrade without the downside risk if he is in any doubt approaching round 1.

    Re: Random GWS thread

Figured this 22 was worth doing also... this one is hard with a lot of changes from last year.

    B - Shaw - Lock.
FB - Corr - This one is a wildcard spot.
    B - Kennedy - Strong lead.
    HB - Williams - Lock.
    CHB - Davis - Lock.
HB - Taylor - They seem to really like him (understandably). Haynes when fit is the 3rd tall, imo, so he'd then battle Corr and co for the FB spot.

    W - Whitfield - Lock.
    C - Kelly - Lock.
W - Tomlinson - Lock, not necessarily here but I expect this is where he starts.

    HFF - Taranto - Lock.
    CHF - Cameron - Lock.
HFF - Deledio - Lock if fit.
    FP - Greene - Lock.
FF - Himmelberg - Pretty much locked.
FP - Lloyd - Seems to be the leader right now but Langdon, Daniels and De Boer in the mix here.

    R - Mumford - Pretty sure he's a lock when not suspended.
    RR - Coniglio - Lock.
Rov - Ward - When Fit, obviously missing early.

Int - Hopper - Lock when fit (lot of this...)
    Int From -

Buntine/Finlayson/Reid/Sheridan/Cumming - Seems like they'd be fighting for one potential spot as the small/mid sized defenders. No real order here but they seem to like Cumming and Buntine is experienced. Don't think they need Finlayson as an offensive weapon as much.
Caldwell - Reckon he's going to start but he's holding Ward's spot and has to force his way in from there.
Daniels/Deboer/ZGL - Along with Lloyd, there's a decent case for one of them on the bench as well as the pocket, wouldn't be surprised if 2 play basically.
Bonar - Decent chance after a decent JLT and games late last year.
    Perryman - Same
Hately - High pick, decent JLT, he's a chance.

I think there are 3 spots and I rekcon Caldwell will take the 4th and then it's a case of whether they go more midfield types or more specialists. There's an extra spot with Ward out early. With guys like Greene and Deledio there's also good chances of extra spots opening pretty quickly.

I'd personally lean towards Caldwell, Reid (versatile), Daniels (speed) and then a coin flip for Hately, Perryman and Bonar with Hately the least likely.

Not an easy 22, they've got about 4 KP defenders of a similar level and the last 6 or so smalls are pretty even.

I haven't had a chance to look at Hately but figured based on what was said about him heading into the draft, he would have been more of a Ward replacement early. That said, hard to compare him to Caldwell given he was injured for a lot of last year and given where he went, he's likely the better of the two (at least early) as long as his body holds up.

Jye Caldwell's popped up on the injury list.

    1-2 weeks (groin).

    Ward still 3-4 weeks.

Same article said that Hately is likely to debut as well.

DeBoer has had a solid little career for GWS up to this point. I think he'll still play most games.

He's no star, but I think Cameron really likes what he brings to the table.
