A bit of news out of the Freo camp

    http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsartic...1/default.aspx

FREMANTLE will take a significantly depleted backline into Sunday's NAB Cup openers against West Coast and Essendon, with coach Ross Lyon declaring key defenders Luke McPharlin, Alex Silvagni and Antoni Grover are unlikely to be available.

McPharlin, who played 20 games last season as Fremantle's primary key defender, rolled his ankle at training last week and missed the club's intra-club hit-out last Friday night, with Silvagni and Grover also rested.

While Grover trained well on Monday, all three missed the club's main training session at Patersons Stadium on Wednesday morning.

"The intention is none of them are training, so I think they'd be unlikely," Lyon said on Wednesday, with Zac Dawson, Peter Faulks and potentially Adam McPhee and Michael Johnson the players Fremantle will turn to in defence.

Lyon said he was keen to select first-year midfielder Lachie Neale on Sunday, with the South Australian clearly the standout draftee on the track this pre-season, while mature-age recruit Lee Spurr and No.16 draft pick Tom Sheridan should also play.

"It's hard to make exact promises because you always lose a couple to niggles (but) Lachie Neale as a first-year player will be playing," the coach said.

"He's come out of the intra-club and he's had a couple of touches but he's got a bit of work to do yet.

"A lot of our first-year players have done the bulk of our training. It's much more their attitude, their enthusiasm and their vibrancy that we've been impressed with."

While midfielder Anthony Morabito, who is returning from a knee reconstruction, completed a solid running session on Wednesday morning, key on-baller David Mundy continued rehabilitation away from the training group.

Fremantle's 2010 club champion appears unlikely to play any part in the club's pre-season campaign, with Lyon also declaring a round one return for the midfielder "optimistic".

Mundy injured an ankle last June and required significant surgery at the end of the season after returning to play in the club's round 22 loss to North Melbourne.

The 26-year-old has suffered setbacks in his rehabilitation but is aiming to be available when Fremantle face the reigning premiers at Patersons Stadium on March 31.

"He's [Mundy] still a way off," Lyon said. "Speaking to him, he thinks he's a chance for round one and I said, 'You're being a bit optimistic'.

"Those great players tend to prove you wrong, so I'm hoping that's what's going to occur.

"In the end I trust my players, so if David's saying round one, let's give him every opportunity.

"I'd love to have a crystal ball because a lot can happen between now and round one."

Lyon said Mundy had "clearly had some setbacks" this summer, with the clearance specialist restricted to running light laps at this stage of his rehabilitation.

Lyon hasn't really been one to play too many rookies over the last few years but you get the feeling he really likes Neale. If he impresses over the NAB cup looks a great chance to debut round 1.

    Go Neale you beauty!

No McPharlin, Grover or Silvagni for this weeks match which gives Spurr a real chance to earn a spot in the team.

Re: Random Fremantle News & Info

It probably means he'll play a lock down role and get a low score.

This could be a positive in that it scares everyone else off, or it could be a negative in that we think he'll play more of a accumulative role at AFL level when in fact the coaches keep him as a lock-down defender.

is it just me that see the old Lyon mentality of reluctance to play youth when he says "he's had a couple of touches but he's got a bit of work to do yet"?

tbh if Spurr gets a game round 1 i will 100% pick him regardless of his pre-season scores.

Yeah, Ross Lyon concerns me. Not known for playing many rookies which is a shame, considering Freo has produced many over the years for our dreamteams. Shattered I'll miss Sunday's games, Neale and Spurr look promising.

Re: Random Fremantle News & Info

I guess that's the million dollar question. Lyon seems to love Neale - and Mellington for that matter. Lyon at St Kilda never really had such an abundance of youth (something ridiculous like 2/3 of our squad has come from the last 4 drafts), so it remains to be seen how willing he is to play them.

He's pretty coy the media, Neale had about 14 touches from memory. I assume that quote is more about how everyone can always get more out of themselves; I'm sure he'd have similar constructive criticism for every player.

Re: Random Fremantle News & Info

Does anyone recall if Lyon played many/any rookies when he first took over the Saints?

I can't remember but last year he did play a few kids when they finally had some good ones coming through, think he would have been playing guys like Gilbert and Dawson(Sure there are others?). Sort of like Sydney, Roos earned a reputation for not playing kids but over his last couple of seasons, when we actually had some with talent, he was more than happy to throw them out there. Ditto Horse last year who is another Roos' protege.

    Fremantle lose backline coach
    http://www.sportsnewsfirst.com.au/ar...ackline-coach/
FORMER Western Bulldogs utility player Todd Curley has walked out on his assistant coaching position with Fremantle.

Dockers management announced late on Tuesday afternoon that their backline coach was leaving on the eve of the new AFL season.

A Dockers statement said: "Assistant coach Todd Curley is leaving the club to take advantage of an opportunity to work outside of football."

Curley, who joined the club as an assistant coach in 2008, advised the playing group of his decision today after having told general manager of football operations Chris Bond at the weekend of his decision to leave the club.

The former coach of West Perth (2006-08), who played 118 AFL games including 115 with the Western Bulldogs and three with Collingwood between 1994 and 2001, told the players he had made a lifestyle decision to leave the AFL industry.

“I have a young family and after almost 20 years as a player and a coach in what is a very demanding industry, I felt it was time to explore other opportunities outside of football and also be able to spend more time with my family,” Curley said.

“The opportunity to take up a new challenge, which I am really excited about and is outside of football, only arose in the past week or so and is the reason why I am leaving the club at such short notice.

“Having said that, it was a tough decision to leave now because under Ross Lyon and his coaching team, the playing group is as well placed at any time in my tenure at the club to achieve the success Fremantle members and supporters have been seeking since the club’s inception.”

General manager of football operations Chris Bond said that the club accepted and understood the reasons behind Curley’s decision to seek a career change.

“Todd has had a very positive influence on both the playing group and the club during his time at Fremantle,” Bond said.

“Although the timing is not ideal, we accept and understand the reasoning behind Todd’s decision. We thank Todd for his contribution to the Fremantle Football Club and wish Todd, Paula, Thalia and Aiden all the very best for the future.”

Not great news for the dockers on the eve of the season but family always comes first.
