the clear intention is that Goddard is unrestricted, no question. but its the phasing in of the rules for existing guys that needs clarification - and given the politics the league could rule in a malovent way.

I'd hate for this to be true, but a cynic would say the interpretation will depend on which end of the stick a "big club" gets in the guinea pig case.

That's exactly right. Now consider who ruling him restricted benefits:
    St Kilda and GWS

Any one of those two a pet AFL project?

    Others that I could see possibly moving are;

Salopek, Slattery, Byrnes, Young, Tuck and possibly Drummond if he thinks he needs a fresh start b/c of injuries, although I wouldn't expect them to improve elsewhere.
No way Nicoski is a top ten earner at WCE, he was shopped around in trade week in 2010 before settling at WCE to rebuild his career at that point. He had a great 2011, but hasn't renegotiated his deal so he wouldn't be close to WCE top money earners.

He can still leave, another team just has to make an offer Saints can't match. Given Saint's salary cap issues over most recent preseason, not sure they can afford that much.

    Re: Free Agency Thread

A bump with the Free Agency period starting tomorrow morning. There is a good article on the AFL site explaining how it all works

    http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsartic...3/default.aspx

    On Compensation:

Only relevant for non-delisted free agents. Occurs for a NET loss of free agents in a given year.
Follows a similar 5 band policy as the GWS/GC compensation, however, there is no tier 1 option of 2 first round picks.

    Bands are:
    1. First round pick following team's finishing pick
    2. End of first round pick
    3. Second round pick following team's finishing pick
    4. End of second round pick.
    5. Third round pick following team's finishing pick

Compensation picks may be traded, however, they cannot be banked for future years and must be used in this year's draft.

    Factors for compensation.
    1. Age
    2. New contract: Base value and ASA
    3. Other benefits: Car, flights, accom etc

    On Rookies:
1st year rookie not receiving a new rookie contract will be considered a delisted free agent
1st year rookie who refuses a new rookie contract will NOT be considered a delisted free agent
2nd year rookie who doesn't accept a further rookie contact will be considered a delisted free agent

    On lodgment:
Unrestricted free agents: Within 7 days of agreement reached or before end of unrestricted free agency period, whichever comes first
Restricted free agents: Details of contract to be lodged within 24hrs of agreement (player must nominate preferred offer), AFL then provides details to current club, current club has 3 days to match contract terms offered (this still applies if lodged contract is on last days of free agency window).

If current club matches, the player either stays at the club, seeks a trade or goes into the draft.
If current club doesn't match, the player either still stays at the club or goes to new club.

Freo have put an offer in for Danyle Pearce, certainly interesting. Obviously looking at injecting some more pace to the midfield/half backline.

I did think Freo were starting to get too hard an edge on them...this should go some way to redressing the balance

I think that this is not a bad move by Fremantle, it will surely assist a guy like Hill, and they have enough inside mids at the moment. Freo have been very proactive in the trade period.

Looks about right, obviously Lynch isn't getting paid much and Chaplin and Pearce are both on some decent coin.

    Re: Free Agency Thread

Personally think Hawthorn is a little rough for getting nothing for Murphy, considering he was a whisker away from playing in the grand final. Otherwise though no issues with the rest of the picks, or lack off given to Geelong and Adelaide for their losses If anything StK is the outliner, might have got lucky with such a good pick considering what every other club got.
