    Re: Free Agency Thread

With Free Agency now a couple of years in, it comes as a surprise to literally no-one that the AFLPA are now trying to alter the deal.

    http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-02-2...ee-agency-push

    Main requests:

    1. 7 years until restricted (8 currently). If they get this, you know they're going to push for 6 years at the next CBA.

    2. Reduce the restricted free agency criteria from top 25% money earners to top 10% money earners. This would be quite dramatic as to qualify for restricted FA (and not be unrestricted) a player in their 8th season (or 7th if 1 goes through) would now need to be in the top 4 money earners at the club, not the top 10-11.

    3. Compensation only for loss of restricted FA. I can see this one being more popular and probably makes it more likely that the unrestricted FA cutoff will stay at 10 years.

    Re: Free Agency Thread

Next thing that may happen is that clubs/ players may want a mid year transfer to another club , that would be fun now wouldnt it . Just think ie Sts dont make the finals so we will trade for Riewoldt then go across to another team who dont make the finals ie Crows and we get Dangerfield , hell of a good time .As long as it doesnt happen

    Re: Free Agency Thread

Like all those changes but I'm a complete fan of pretty much unrestricted free agency and also that their should be no compensation for losing players, especially the unrestricted guys.

The best way to fix tanking in a sport like the AFL is to have a functional free agency system that allows a bad team to add core pieces that can contribute now. The NFL, imo, has basically got free agency 100% correct and from a cap management/structure type system the AFL is certainly most similar to the NFL.

    Re: Free Agency Thread

Will add that the current system actually almost works in reverse of how free agency should, be being so restrictive it's pretty much become a system for the good teams to poach players from the bad teams, which just makes the equity feature all messed up and free agency is mostly about equity.
