    Free Agency Thread

Thought we should have a general thread for the upcoming free agency which begins this year.

Here are the rules as initially laid out http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsartic...9/default.aspx

There is some uncertainty about what happens when a player has reached 10 years and comes out of contract for the first time after more than seven years at the club, i.e. doesn't come out of contract after 8th or 9th completed seasons.

According to this article http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-new...124-1qfqo.html, we will know all of the players eligible for free and restricted free agency on March 20.

Now, we can work out which players will qualify for the 10+ years service but we don't yet know which of the 8 year players are not in their club's top 10 highest paid players.

    Looking at my own club, players with more than 8 years (but not above 10) service at the club are;

    Morris
    Minson
    Cooney
    Williams
    Griffen

Now, I know Griffen is tied up and Cooney is the club's highest paid player so they're fine. Minson comes out of contract this year, Williams and Morris I'm unsure of.

    Top 10 earners (likely)
    Cooney
    Lake
    Griffen
    Boyd
    Gia
    Murphy
    Hargrave (Vet)
    Gilbee (Vet)
Cross/Morris/Sherman/Higgins probably cover the last 2 spots.

This means Minson is likely to be unrestricted free agent this year, Williams as well if out of contract. Morris would have to be behind two of Cross/Sherman/Higgins contract wise and be out of contract this year to qualify.

    Re: Free Agency Thread

    Adelaide's list is interesting

Doughty is on our veteran's list & re-signed this year so I think he'd be about the bottom of our top 10

Tippett is the jewel in our crown when we signed him in 2009 & I think he is our highest paid by a fair distance
Knights would be up there so would Thompson.

Johncock, Jacobs, Vince, van Berlo, Sloane, Walker, Douglas & Rutten are other candidates for top 10.

Reilly a possibility as well but I hope not.

Also Tambling was probably not brought over cheap.

In fact the only player with 8 years service who would be at risk is Symes I believe in an unrestricted sense in 2012 but there has been no real thought put in.

Rough guess at a Top 10

    Tippett

    Daylight

    Knights
    Thompson
    Vince
    Dangerfield

    van Berlo
    Johncock
    Rutten
    Jacobs
    Tambling/Doughty/Douglas/Walker/Sloane/Reilly

Here is an article today about Deledio and free agency http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/af...-1226252896692

Deledio, 24, is a prime target for Greater Western Sydney and also qualifies for free agency when his deal expires in October.

    Re: Free Agency Thread

From our POV, our highest paid players at this stage would be

    Watson
    Fletcher
    McVeigh
    Stanton
    Hocking
    Hille
    Hurley
    Monfries
    Winderlich
    Pears? Zaharakis?

That leaves Slattery, Dyson and Lovett-Murray as restricted free agents and no one as an unrestricted.

Wouldn't those three all be unrestricted given their not in top 10 by wage?

Correct divvy. The top 10 players are the restricted free agents providing they have played at the club for 10 years.

    Re: Free Agency Thread

Dyson drafted at 2003 draft, debut 2004 so 2012 is his 9th season. Slattery drafted 2004, debut 2005 so 2012 will be his 8th year and NLM drafted 2003, debut 2004 so 2012 is his 9th season. So all three are 8+ years and eligible for restricted free agency if in the top 10 paid players and also eligible for unrestricted free agency if not in the top 10 paid players.

Not too many in this camp at youthful Melbourne, off the top of my head. Sylvia would be an obvious target but he signed over the offseason for 3 more years. Brad green would qualify. Mark Jamar could possibly come into this discussion. I think he's been around for 8 years now and would be fairly well paid.

Will do some more thinking about this when time permits.

    Top 10 Paid

    Harvey
    Petrie
    Goldstein
    Swallow
    Wells
    Ziebell
    Thompson
    Grima
    McIntosh
    Adams/McMahon

    10+ Year Players

    Harvey (no chance of leaving)
    Petrie (no chance of leaving)
Firrito (probably in his last year)
Wells (could have gone home to WCE last year. signed until 2013 instead)
    McIntosh (signed until 2013)

    8-10 Year Players

    McMahon (signed until 2013)

Do years on the rookie list count?

    Re: Free Agency Thread

This is how Free Agency will work in 2012:

Document found on the Collingwood Football Club website.

    1. A player has served seven seasons or less of AFL football at one club, and is now out of contract.

The player is not eligible for free agency if his club wishes to retain him. He may only move clubs via a trade or the Draft. If he delists himself, he is subject to the Draft, and may be selected by any club.

    2. A player has served seven seasons or less of AFL football at one club, and has been delisted by his club.

The player is a Free Agent and is eligible to field offers from all rival AFL clubs.

The player must decide on the best offer of his choice from one rival club.

The player can move AUTOMATICALLY to the new club of his choice.

His original club, which chose to delist him, does not receive any compensation pick for the loss of the player.

    3. A player has served eight or more seasons of AFL football at one club, is one of the 10 highest-paid players at his club, and is now out of contract for the first time since reaching eight seasons of service.

The player is eligible to field offers from all rival AFL clubs.

If he wishes to change clubs, the player must decide on the best offer of his choice from one rival club.

His club has the right to match the presented offer.

If the club matches the offer, he may choose to remain with his original club, seek a trade or enter the Draft.

If the club does not or can not match the offer, the player can move to the new club of his choice.

His original club will receive a compensation pick for the loss of the player, on an AFL-determined formula to apply where clubs lose more free agents than they gain in any single transfer period.

    4. A player has served eight or more seasons of AFL football at one club, is NOT one of the 10 highest-paid players at his club, and is now out of contract for the first time since reaching eight seasons of service.

The player is eligible to field offers from all rival AFL clubs.

If he wishes to change clubs, the player must decide on the best offer of his choice from one rival club.

His club does NOT have the right to match the presented offer, and the player can move AUTOMATICALLY to the new club of his choice.

His original club will receive a compensation pick for the loss of the player, on an AFL-determined formula.

    5. A player has served ten or more seasons of AFL football at one club, has already come out of contract once in the period after serving his first eight or more seasons at his club, and is now out of contract.

The player is eligible to field offers from all rival clubs.

The AFL will release data of the restricted and unrestricted free agents on March 20.
Found it on facebook seems legit enough

What does his grandfathering provision mean? I haven't seen that term used before.
